Hi everyone my name is Ernesto and I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for California Altura Vista. I received and email from an individual who asked me when and in what circumstances should someone seeking professional counseling. This is a very good question. And I'm going to answer that...stay tuned!
Before I address the question of when and in what circumstances should someone seek professional counseling, I want to address a few the misconceptions about counseling and the role of psychotherapist. Throughout my career and experiences as a therapist I've come across many who really don't know what counseling is about, let alone the role of the therapist. Some people have a distorted notion that psychotherapist will solve all their relational, emotional and psychological problems for them while they do little to no effort on their part. Other people believe that they can hire psychotherapists to "fix" their problematic child, adolescence, husband, wife, or other family member. And still others believe that psychotherapy is irrelevant and really does not help people at all.
Here's the truth. Psychotherapists are trained professionals who address problems from a psychological perspective and provide, increase awareness and promote solutions to those problems. Psychotherapy involves a therapeutic professional relationship between the therapist and individual in hopes to address triggers that influence thoughts, emotions and behavioral patterns that are problematic for the individual.
Therapists don't "fix" problems per se, they empower the individual and the family to make healthy choices that decrease and/or eliminate their presenting problems.
So to answer the question—When and in what circumstances should someone seek professional counseling? Here are some of them, but I do have to mention that they are not limited to just these.
Seek professional counseling when
1) When you have suicidal thoughts and or thought of hurting yourself or others.
2) When your mental and emotional health such as anxiety and depression becomes too difficult to manage and your relationships, daily life and employment are negatively affected.
3) When conflicts with your loved ones become intense, aggressive and downright abusive.
4) When addiction consumes your life and isolates you from others and keeps you from reaching your highest potential.
Like I said these are some of the reasons to seek professional counseling. You may have your own reasons. Whatever they maybe, you are not alone, help is out there.
