Surely this time it's the year of the Linux desktop surely with Windows 10 reaching it's end of life in 2025 that will be when everybody decides to finally migrate to Linux. While it's certainly possible I find the idea kind of unlikely.

Unlikely, but it's possible that Linux will move from 1% to 2% on the Steam survey.

I know a bunch of people who are planning on learning linux before 2025 because of win 11, while I'm not saying it'll be "the year" everything valve has done has definitely made it more appetizing for a lot of people, including people who've never tried anything but windows

Edit: fixed typo

I migrated because of win11. My love for Linux convinced me to enroll in informatics.

Before watching the video I will give my Linux prediction... That year will never come, there will never be a big wave...
However, small nudges, hardware developments and games on Linux and Microsoft screwing up will cause the enthusiasts to change.
Once the enthusiasts gamers have changed over, that is when you will start to see changes happen in the biggest group, the normies, slowly.

The reason for that is, the normies go to ask the techie of the family what to buy for their next computer or whatever and catch up on buzz words, that techie is already on Linux, they would influence them to do the same.
Just like you today can catch computer illeterates having learned that they should have an i7 or i5 in their machine, because the techie in their family told them so.

People are already migrating to Linux by the thousands, getting more popular by the Day. Thanks to the endless videos being put out by content creators. Lets face Windows at this time is Win 8, Win 10, and Win 11, for Content. Linux with its hundreds of Distros are a Content creators Dream!!!! Even the Windows guys are now doing Linux Content ... Keep it up Guys, great

When I worked at Sears (before they closed down) the cash registers ran on a old Ubuntu LTS, while all the standard desktops ran on windows 7. Nothing was up to date, my assumption was a lot of third party security software was used on both, becuase everything was way slower then it should be.

Most people I know have PCs that range from Core 2 Duo Quads to 5th Gen. 95% of computer users on earth have computers that are 6 or more years old. TPM requirement is a scam to sell new computers.

Wine and Proton have hugely improved in the past year. Im convinced Linux will be ready to take in all those Windows users

Yep, spot on,

Linux community it's sort of like a dysfunctional family..

In the Linux community

1. You have a lot of neckbeards that don't want Linux to be highly adopted and want to be niche..

So they can say look at me I use Gentoo

2. You have the ones that really enjoy Linux and also use windows...
And treated as a tool (camp that I fall in) and every once in awhile if I think the person is tech-savvy I say you might want to try Linux..

3. And then you have the lLinux zealots that treated it like it's a religion..and spreading stallman's ministry to the masses whether they like it or not...and by the ggrace of stallman THIS YEAR WILL BE THE YEAR OF LINUX...

But in the end most people hate change and they just stick with what they know.

Windows 10 hasn't been out for 10 years, it will have been out for 10 years in 2025. It was released in 2015.

Never happened, never will. The only device capable of bringing Linux to the masses is the Steam Deck and the rising popularity of PC handhelds. Maybe then more OEMs will follow but it will be slow and steady not explosive.

I switched to Linux a couple of years ago, and boot Windoze 10 in VirtualBox because of one proprietry software that only runs on Windoze. I don't do any dual booting at all. Windex in a VM is sufficient enough for me. For everything else, daily driving Manjaro KDE is fantasticly wonderful.

According to the numbers I've seen Linux marketshare has been increasing slowly but steadily since at least 2009. Back the it was about 0.69% and now it's over 2.3%. Rather than taking the world by storm, Linux is rising like the tide.

i never expected to be that early...

also the fact that windows 10 is soon going to be 10 years old baffles me, how the hell is time going by this fast?

i didn't necessarily migrate to linux, but i have begun using linux ~30% of the time. and i have migrated to the idea of plug and play OSes. i have several linux distros installed on SSDs which i can plug into a dock and start it up. going forward into the future, i plan on having all the OSes i use plugged into a dock with all my user data saved onto a separate external HDD/SSD that is formatted to a partition that all the various OSes can read/write.

i've also begun to get fed up with OSes (windos or linux) that have software that goes just about anywhere. i'm beginning to develop a love for immutable OSes with containerized applications.

The sentences you write on your whiteboard on every video always give a smile to my face.

Before the video: The thing is, most people only change their OS if an automatic update does it by force or when they change their laptop, most users don't choose an OS ever, most people that choose an OS hare already linux users.

I think it's worth mentioning that there are those people who don't want to upgrade their computer but their outdated os is giving them issues and they decide to switch to Linux because of it. Something as critical as a WiFi driver being borked can make a difference.

Well… I guess I was a part of the Windows XP EOL Linux migration 😆 I actually know a decent amount of people who switched to Linux after XP support was ended. For me, it was a video by Spatry (no longer an active Linux Youtuber it seems) that suggested "Linux Lite" for people who are looking for a replacement for XP… made the switch, and never looked back since other than for occasionally playing and modding GTA San Andreas 😅
