The Pointer, often called the English Pointer, is a medium to large-sized breed of dogs, developed in England as a gun dog. Energetic and fun-loving, they’re well suited to active homes where they’ll be loving members of the family.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Pointers that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Sporting Dogs
Weight: 45 to 75 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 11 inches to 2 feet, 4 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years

The Pointer is instantly recognizable. From long head to finely pointed tail, his entire body suggests his purpose: to point game for the hunter. When a Pointer scents game birds he stands tall and still, one foot raised off the ground, pointing the hunter in the right direction. Before the development of guns, this was an essential skill, as birds were netted rather than shot. When shooting birds became popular, the Pointer was still needed to point and then retrieve them.

Today, the Pointer is known as the Cadillac of bird dogs, prized for his speed, ability to go all day in the field, "stand steady to wing and shot" — meaning that he holds his position as birds rise into the sky and the guns go off — and his personable nature. His love of people and short, easy-care coats make him an excellent candidate as a family companion as well.

Pointer people like to say that their dogs don't consider themselves dogs but members of the family. They're sturdy and energetic enough to play all day with active children, and their alert nature makes them excellent watchdogs, sounding the alarm at anything out of the ordinary.

Although he's focused in the field — full of energy and "hunt" — he's fun-loving and mischievous at home. For the Pointer who's not a regular hunting dog, training and plenty of daily exercises will help channel his active body and mind into constructive pursuits rather than the destruction that can be wrought by a bored Pointer.

I just adopted a pointer at the shelter. I wasn't looking for one, never really thought about the breed, but he kinda chose us by launching into our arms for kisses and hugs and rolling over for belly rubs. He's only 4 months old but wow what a loveable cuddly playful little puppy. He learns fast, follows me around, and has lots of energy for playing-- loves to fetch balls and play with tug toys. I am over the moon, what an awesome breed I had no idea.

My granny was gifted with an English Pointer in the 80s. Troy would follow us, kids, everywhere. He was calm and gentle with us, but would bark at strangers, if needed. I miss him and want one for myself.

My pointer is super energetic. He loves running around the backyard and even getting into the farm on the other side of the woods. He's excellent in the woods off leash

My dog is mixed with pointer. But has many of the characteristics. He's so loving and protective. Especially when I'm sick he won't leave the side of my bed even when I leave the yard door open for him to go in and out in the house as he pleases. He just cuddles up to the foot of my bed.

i have an english pointer lab mix and everyone who meets her calls her an earth angel. she is patience, loyal, learns tricks with vew few repition (it blows my mind! training her was so sooo easy) great off leash, can be independent but def knows when she needs to listen vs something i just want her to do. ages 6months-3 yrs were hell bc of her energy... minimum 3 hrs a day for EXERCISE, so i started taking her to work with me (10 hrs out, 5 days a week at a health center).

We have a 3yr old short hair Border Collie and got out black and white short hair German Pointer puppy a couple of months ago. They are just about equal as far as temperament. We get so many compliments on how calm they both are. But I will say, if our lil pointer is left alone for too long, she tries to entertain herself. That only happened once ….3 yummy books and she was good 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️I refuse to cage train, I think that’s cruel.
So yes on that the need not be left alone for more than a few hours. Even if it’s just someone stopping in. I found leaving the tv on makes her happy. Love them both SOOOO MUCH ! Both awesome breeds ❣️❣️❣️

I had one of these in mexico, always loved spending time with him when I would go every year. One time i go to mexico excited to be with him once again and he's nowhere to be seen, I asked my aunt which the dog lived with about what happened and she said that some guys down the street gave him food with poison in it😔. Finally found what the breed is called and now I'm planning on adopting one soon, same color, black and white.
