The roles carried out by the dogs involved in these types of hunting vary significantly, and a breed of dog that is an excellent upland hunter will not necessarily be a good choice for wetland hunting and vice versa. The lab is truly one of the best bird dogs known to man. We had 3 as kids, and they were amazing hunting dogs. They literally never failed to do what bird dogs should do. Even in the tallest buffle grass, I can’t remember a single bird that was lost.

And the dog that is not on this list is the German Wirehaired pointer or Deutsch Drahthaar, They were breed to hunt upland bird, water fowl, feather and fur. Find down game from rabbits to foxes to deer. They don't mind the cold and snow. They are better than a lab.

I'll put my Standard Poodle against any breed for the ability to do both chores really well. There may be some better water dogs and there may be some better bird dogs but when you need a dog to do both the Standard Poodle is overlooked.

Anyone ever heard of a Pointing Lab?? my family had pointing labs when I was growing up that we used for bird hunting and duck hunting. At the time nobody had ever heard of that breed of lab.

What most people actually don't know is that some of these dogs have never even seen a bird and have basically been destroyed as useful hunting dogs from the show dog world. Many sporting breeds have been promoted by their "looks" and not their innate hunting abilities. Breeds like the Irish Setter, English Setter, Gordon Setter, English Springer, Golden Retriever, Cocker spaniel, Standard Poodle, and many other breeds are now either divided into hunting and show lines or don't hunt at all. You can blame greedy breeders and the AKC for that!

Most bird dogs come in 2 types, field bred lines and show types. If you're gonna go hunting make sure you get a field bred type. The show dog type couldn't hunt if their lives depended on it. Show people breed for looks alone and they're generally a lot less healthy.

My dog is to gaurd the chickens and ducks but when predator came he tell them to go away if not valtures will stay(toffee so far kill small mice to possum)
