Correct me if i'm wrong, but this is the first room you find basil in, and i must say, what a masterpiece of a room, it uses everything it has to draw you in, but then basil dies, and all that relief and comfort is taken away from you, and Omori doesn't seem to care, it's nice foreshadowing for what happens later and how grim Black Space really is

I actually laughed when Basil broke into pieces like a watermelon because of just how sudden and unexpected it was.

“Basil” being an actual plant is such an amazing analogy for his role in the story. Omori sees Basil as a weed, or a flower, that constantly needs to be cut or ripped out whenever he grows too far from what his planter intended. He wants him to just look pretty, or cute, and whenever that flower strays from that particular definition, he eliminates it and replaces it. Basil dying over and over is symbolic of the truth being repressed over and over, but Sunny misses Basil, and tries to replant him into his mind without completely erasing him. But every time he talks to Omori, he leads Sunny closer to the truth, which Omori cannot take.

You guys have no idea how flabbergasted I was when Basil just became the watermelon. I had actually no idea how to react. Do I laugh? Am I confused? Am I sad? I literally just stood there in silence staring at Basil-melon contemplating my existence
