Ahh back when the movie was better than the trailer.

I remember being a 5 year old kid and my older brother wanted to see Star Wars, I wanted to see The Island of Dr. Moreau. I cried because he wouldn't take me to see it and I had to go see Star Wars with him. We sat through Star Wars that afternoon 3 times, I went to sleep on the 4th. It was a life changing experience. Some people remember where they were when JFK was assassinated, some remember the Moon Landing. Star Wars was like that to my generation, a kid of the late 70s to end of the 80s when I finished high school. A magical time to grow up as a kid.

I remember seeing the first trailer for Star Wars six months or so before it was released and it was basically this trailer, but it was more raw and without much of the post visual and sound effects added. In fact, it was so raw that when I saw the trailer, I actually thought to myself "Aw, this movie will be crap." And I was already a big sci-fi fan. When the movie came out and I saw it, it absolutely blew me away! My mind went back to first seeing that first preview and couldn't believe how wrong I was. It played at my local theater for 9 months straight and we'd go see it again and again. If we had nothing to do, we'd say "Let's go see Star Wars again!" Saw it 30-some times in those 9 months alone. It got to the point where we got used to waiting in line and we'd see familiar faces after doing this so often. What a golden time.

Amazing how different the tone is without the music....

0:54 "light years ahead of it's time" is like "hurry up, school starts in 5 centimetres"

I love these old trailers. They capture a moment in time and show us the beautiful simplicity of how different our world view was in those days. It's also a splendid example of how a trailer should convey the basics of the story without overselling it or giving away most of the plot.

In the summer of 1976, I was 11 years old. My mom and I went to see the comedy, Silver Streak, at the Cordova Mall in Pensacola, FL. After we sat down, she left to grab some Cokes and popcorn. This trailer played while she was away. By the time she came back, I was a babbling, hyperactive lunatic, whose eyes were about to pop out of his skull [some would say not much has changed since then]. I couldn't even begin to describe what I had just seen. All I knew is that the summer of 1977 could not get here fast enough.

To call the original film personally, socially, creatively and technologically transformative does not even begin to measure the full impact it had on the world - an impact with reverberations still echoing to this day.

"Somewhere in space this could be happening right now" .... well actually long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

Imagine being in the movie theater and watching this trailer, thinking it might just be a silly space movie. But, it became a world-wide phenomenon, and 40 years later, it's still one of the greatest movie sagas ever

This goes to show that Star Wars is great, of course... but you don’t get the full experience without John Williams’ soundtrack.

The strangest thing about this trailer is that it worked.

How cool would it be if they did this again for Episode 9?

Saw it on my 5th birthday - June 11, 1977. My dad, Pete took me. I remember vividly, - it’s one of my oldest and most cherished memories.
