Every Way to Transfer a Drawing on a Canvas for Painting (7 Ways) - Oil Painting For Beginners

Welcome to THE ATELIER OF FIGURATIVE ARTS with yours truly.
The idea of the “Atelier” is that we all work together on the same exercises and get something out of it. I get to create interactive and participative streams and videos and you get to learn from academic models, share your work and get critique from the community. It’s a fun way for us all to create, interact and learn together.

▶ Here's how it works:
Each week, I'll upload a Painting Assignment on Tuesday and a Drawing Assignment on Friday. I'll then cover it in a Live Stream or in a YouTube Video (make sure all your notifications are activated - Streams Are Tuesday and Friday 9PM UTC+1).

Important: you don't have to be a Paid Member, all Free Members can access and download the Plates (it's free and open access, plates are CC-by-sa 4.0).

Then you just do the assignment (easy, right?) and you can post in the Discord when it's done or when you need help from the community.

▶ The Atelier Mindset:
- We're not trying to make something artistic with these assignments but practice key artistic notions that aim towards improving realism.
- This method follows the Academic tradition so some of these are tough, the highest level of excellence should be your goal, don't botch your work!
- Don't improvise, follow the model exactly and stick to the instructions.
- Most Assignment plates have 3 difficulty levels, pick the right instruction for your level (level 1 is beginner Atelier student level, level 2 is approximately the second year of academic training and level 3 is the last year of classical training).
- Take your time, you don’t have to finish assignments in a week.

About me (bio) :
Website :

I am an artist living and working in France. I paint mainly imaginative realism. I’m mostly self-taught, I learned the techniques of the Academy of the Nineteenth century by myself and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. On YouTube, I do mostly drawing and oil painting techniques videos in the Atelier tradition, I share thoughts and explanations that can be useful to anyone, from beginners to more advanced artists interested in picking up realism and classical figuration.

Beautiful work! I simply use Carbon/Transfer paper so that the image is not reversed. It's not easy to find nowadays. It was used to make a "Carbon Copy" of a Typewriter document as you typed it! I learned this thanks to my dear grandmother. Plus, you can reuse it multiple times.

Whenzou paper is cheap and super versatile, it's semi transparent, super thin ( 30gr) but strong and doesn't bleed. Comes in very large sheets or rolls. Many way to use it. Can print on it. Can directly be glued on the support with acrylic/pva and then painted.

I personally use freehand because I cannot afford a projector.
So for me, I end up drawing the photo collage I made from 5 to 10 times. Depends on how many iterations I need.

If you're using a grid to transfer your drawing, It's okay to break some of the squares down into even smaller grid squares where there is a hard part that you really want to pay attention to getting accurate detail.
Watercolor pencils also work well for drawing on canvas because they don't smudge or lift into your paint layers like graphite or charcoal can. The lines can also be softened or blended with a damp brush without harming the canvas.

9:17 on this type of style, althought i prefer already make a sketch with the pencil then use an underpainting for the someone that just started to try oil paint, but there is something about using a freehand brush to do it is something i felt more right with it and it feel more natural than the one that you pre-draw with pecil and then make a sienne underpaint and start painting. i dont know how to explain it

Supposing I've pencilled something on to a canvas, and it's bleeding into the paint and/or medium... Is there any way of avoiding this? Could I spray the pencil with fixative?

A variation of pouncing is still used for embroidery today.
