Ryan Diroma was shooting hoops in his backyard when he found his 8-month-old daughter, Blake, choking in his wife's arms. As he rushed into his Arizona home, Diroma hit his daughter three times, and then he heard her cry and a carrot came flying out of her mouth. Now, he's crediting his teen lifeguard job for helping him know what to do. Diroma says he remembers a picture that showed that you're supposed to hold a baby at a downward incline if they're choking.

As a CPR instructor this makes me happy. Every parent/caregiver should learn CPR.

Happy ending to a parent's worst nightmare. This story will no doubt educate some future parent in what to do if and when they find themselves in a similar situation.

Isn't the brain such a beautiful thing? He was just minding his business and then when prompted for help his brain just says "oh yeah, I remember that thing we saw 20 years ago" but it's so powerful it's doesn't need to tell him, he just sees the image in his mind and his body knows what to do. Survival, dad instinct, God, whatever it is, it is amazing.

Thank you Mr Bob Wertz one of my health teachers from Sterling High school Somerdale New Jersey for your persistence with teaching CPR in health class. It wasn’t part of our curriculum he managed to squeeze it in knowing the importance of people knowing CPR. Mr Wertz has since passed away but his teachings has not only lived on with so many of us. I have to credit him for equipping me with the knowledge of CPR. It’s because of you that I was able to save the lives of 2 toddler girls. Thank you so much Mr Wertz I will forever and always be grateful to you. May God rest this great man’s soul who’s made such a huge difference in so many lives.

My Mom saved my son. He was choking on a round peppermint. I was screaming and in a panic. She was so calm and did the Heimlich maneuver. He was 3 or 4. He is now 33. I thank God that my Mom was there. Thank God this Dad knew what to do. Why was an 8 month old eating a carrot?? 😡

I’m glad I saw this. When I’ve seen other rescue videos they aren’t hitting very hard and it takes a while to dislodge whatever it is. So good to know you have to hit pretty hard to ensure survival.

This happened to our baby 22 years ago. But there wasn't anything stuck that we could see. He just stopped breathing. But I also remembered learning this in Boy Scouts and did it. If feels so wrong hitting your baby that hard, but whatever caused him to stop breathing fixed itself with the back pounding. We had a couple across the street who were both EMTs so we took him over there and they couldn't find anything wrong. He's now 22 and married so I guess there weren't any long lasting effects. 😊 Learning simple first aid is easy, cheap and definitely saves lives...

Please teach kids in school about cpr, how to handle someone choking etc as part of education. Also new parents can take such courses. There is a device(shown in inside edition)to help kids to dislodge while choking. This is so great that the dad was there at that moment and knew what to do.
