A pet or companion animal is an animal kept primarily for a person's company, protection, and/or entertainment rather than as a working animal, sport animal, livestock, or laboratory animal. Popular pets are often noted for their attractive appearances, and their loyal or playful personalities.
While different person may have different choices of pets, some animals are actually illegal / not allowed to be kept as pets.
These animals are including bats, alligators, big cats ( tigers, lions, leopards), monkeys, penguins, slow lorises, skunks, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and fennec foxes.

Sugar gliders are perfectly legal in the US!
I live in the US and I have seen sugar gliders for sale at the fair every year when I go.

I live in New Jersey and my next door neighbor has a fennec fox and my cousins in Massachusetts have a sugar glider

My brother rescued a Skunk that was kept as a pet. It had its scent glad removed but it was found abandoned outside of a pet rescue center in a box that was taped closed with air holes cut into it as well as loads of cat food just poured into the box.

My brother found out about the skunk from his wife who volunteered at the shelter and they decided to take it in.

The damn thing was a brat. It loved messing with the toilet paper rolls in the bathroom and nibbling at feet from under the couch while someone was sitting there. He also loved to be pet and scratched, he would always be looking for attention.

Skunks are awesome pets, very uncommon here in Canada but the only way to ensure they don't permenantly stink up your house is to have their main defensive tool removed and I just don't think that's worth it or fair to the animal. So while my experience with them was a positive one, I would never own a Skunk as a pet.

Phew I was about to beak the news to my family that it was illegal to own my pet sugar gliders

There was a lady in loris sc right down the road, that had monkeys, lions, giraffes, one elephant, and a few more different animals in her backyard. She had them just bc she wanted them. But, the lions were in tiny cages and looked so miserable.
