My beautiful Husky died suddenly last year, aged 12. She would howl when she was happy, and she was happy most of the time. Her melodious howling attracted a lot of attention and would make her lots of friends. She loved howling in the pub and lapping the local ale out of her admirers' cupped hands, like she was singing for drinks. I would readily have another Husky, but I realise that I'm getting on a bit now, and the breed demands a lot of physical exercise.
But to answer the question posed, I believe that all three theories are true to one degree or another.

My Husky doesn't howl as much as it sounds like he's trying to talk. High pitch barks and low grunts like Tim Allen from the show Tool Time!

I have one and is very talkative. I believe that because they are wolf desend they communicate with others. Wolves travel hunt in pacts so they communicate among themselves.
