I was in the fire service for 10 years and my physical training consisted strictly of bodybuilding 5 to 6 days a week. The excess mass actually made the job ten times harder than it had to be. When you weigh 250 and then strap on an extra 65 to 70 pounds and then go running into a building and pulling charged hand lines you realize quickly that proper conditioning is absolutely essential for the job. I took a brake from the service for the past 6 years and will now be going back at age 40. I just completed and passed the CPAT exam and I can promise you that if you are thinking of getting into firefighting you and metcon better become best buddies.
