Anakin emulated Obi-Wan’s big move against Maul… and didn’t think straight.

It is (at least in theory) a pretty good way to catch a superior opponent off guard, it just so happens that Obi-Wan was ready for it since he presumably invented that move.

difference is that Obi-Wan caught Darth Maul off-guard by leaping over him whereas Obi-Wan anticipated Anakin/Vader's move. it was that same mindset that helped Obi-Wan kill Maul on Tatooine. Maul's mistake was the same as Vader's in trying an old trick on a new Obi-Wan.

It worked against Maul because Maul was overconfident: he thought Jedi were weak and didnt expect Obi-Wan to pull off such a move. Obi-Wan didnt make the same mistake, he knew Anakin well enough to know he was going to do it and knew precisely how to counter it.

I actually got the pleasure of sitting at this panel. I was so impressed that he quoted lore. He also corrected the interviewer on the duel of fates being in TPM and not ROTS.

"I'll try spinning. That's a neat trick!"

It stands to reason that Obi-wan, being so well versed in defence, would know quite well how to counter his old moves.

It also tracks with Obi-Wan having endlessly analyzed his first fight with Maul. Like how he assumes Qui-Gonn's stance when Maul finally tracks him down on Tatooine, baiting him into using the same attack again and countering him with a single movement. There's not a single move from that battle that will ever take him by surprise again.

Hayden Christensen still got it when fighting as Anakin Skywalker in the Ahsoka tv show and it's like as if it was yesterday for him.

Anakin was really an incredible duelist, Obi-wan more than likely would have lost very quickly had he not been the one to train him. Obi-wans familiarity with Anakin's training gave him an edge in predicting his movements. Look at the other jedi that fought him, he was fighting several at once in killing them like 'childs play' goes double for younglings. There have been many people that said the high ground isn't a tactic in a duel, normally yeah, in this case there was freaking lava! Anakin couldn't just step off onto the shore, did yall not see him burst into flames? Only option is to jump, he just chose a horrible spot to do it, had he went down the lava river some first and had distance he would have been fine.

leaving out he bit where he says obi-wan and anakin could've talked about how cool it was, honestly it'd be such a clone wars conversation

All that we know is that everything we saw in the prequels and the original trilogy was worth it Anakin Skywalker has reached his full potential. Fulfilled the prophecy of the chosen one destined to bring balance to the force and become the God of the force. We'll see more of him and Ahsoka. count on it I'm sure he knows.

I heard there was a deleted part of Anakin's final fight with Dooku where he successfully pulled off a move similar to this flip. It would have been nice to have been kept in, as it would have helped explain why Anakin was so confident, since he'd pulled a similar move before, and it would have emphasized the reason he hated the Jedi Council for underestimating him, which, in some ways, they did. The difference of course is that Dooku didn't have 15 seconds of non-combat to prepare for that exact move like Kenobi did.

I've always took what Obi-Wan meant is that he had the "Moral High-Ground" you know because Anakin killed all those younglings.

"It didn't play out the way he hoped"

A slight understatement

I think it's logical how else did vader get in that life support suit

stop asking them questions before someone accidentally confirms something horrifying, like the sequels being canon or something absurd!

Anakin's problem is that he was fighting the wrong opponent.

They should've had the high-ground scene more obviously parallel the Maul scene. Obi-Wan should've been on a high ledge overlooking Anakin much further below, as it is Obi-Wan's ground was only slightly higher than Anakin's and he could've easily just jumped up on the ground beside him and kept going. It would've worked so much better if it was set up more like the Darth Maul Death scene.

Of course, I'm guessing the reason they didn't do it like this was because Anakin needed to roll back down to the edge of the lava after getting cut, and that wouldn't have worked if it was a lava cliff instead of a lava beach. I would've just solved this by putting the lava beach directly BEHIND Obi-Wan and the cliff, and have Anakin's momentum from the jump carry him over to the beach after he gets cut. Of course, for this to work, the landmass that this takes place on couldn't just be the edge of the river like it was in the original, it would need to either be a small island in the lava lake that's right NEXT to the edge of the river (so Obi-Wan could get back safely) or some kind of cape/land-strip that extended from the mainland.

This would've been a way better way to do the high ground sequence, IMO. I love the high ground sequence for the memes, but with the way it's set up, it's campy at best.
