Why is Betelgeuse dimming? Is Betelgeuse about to explode? Betelgeuse is a variable red super giant star located in the Orion constellation. Most estimations have it going supernova within the next 100,000 years, but could it be sooner?

Dr. Edward Guinan has been studying Betelgeuse and other variable stars from Villanova for over 40 years. He joins John Michael Godier to discuss his recent updates on the fainting and dimming of Betelgeuse.

Updates on the "Fainting" of Betelgeuse

Only now I have found this channel. It's amazing. This is just what I need to help me. I'm a first year astrophysics students, so anything and everything around the subject that's really good and easy to follow gets a huge thumbs up. About to make my way steadily through every video. Thanks a million.

Great episode, one of your best yet. Primarily because your guest is so outstanding. You absolutely need to get this guy back for more episodes. Seriously.

I'm going to miss Betelgeuse..
The night is clear and beautiful, and I literally just looked at Betelgeuse minutes ago, and it is so very faint..

Red dwarves should still be watched for biosignitures IMO. Aside from the possibility of advanced spacefarers moving in, the sheer number of red dwarves means more chances for some kind of life to evolve.

Another fascinating show. I need you to step-up your production schedule, though. I get bored extremely easily, so if you could start producing one of these shows every couple days, that would be great. Thanks.

Astronomer: It's close to go boom!
Me: Oh cool when?

Astronomer: In the next 100.000 years!
Me: ....

Every single channel jumped on the bandwaggong of a variable star dimming. I think I've now watched/heard about 16 people talking about it.

I had thought it was off Didn't think anything of it really because I thought it was just my perception. It would be so cool to see it go. It would bring such a great amount of attention to the "ether" we're flying everybody seems not to think about. I bet it would be a huge boost to funding the sciences of exploration.

Great episode John.

Shouldn’t the question be “what happened to Betelgeuse?” Whatever happened there happened over 600 years ago. Betelgeuse is over 600 light years from earth.

Fantastic episode. I wish we could see Betelgeuse go supernova in our lifetime it would be quite a site. Thanks for the episode!

You should be on Audible narrating sci-fi and science books. Your voice sounds perfect for it.
