Mysterious Dimming of Betelgeuse Explained

The unexpected and significant dimming periods of Betelgeuse in late 2019 and early 2020 has puzzled astronomers around the world. Some believed that it signaled the star's upcoming explosion. But then the dimming abruptly stopped. Thanks to observations by NASA's Hubble telescope we now know that the dimming periods were most likely caused by the ejection and cooling of dense hot gases and that the star may be going through another dimming period about a year earlier than expected.

I've watched the constellation Orion in the night sky since I was little. Betelgeuse was always very evident with its reddish glow. Now it's a somewhat dull star, not very evident/visible.

Learning about something that you can see with your naked eye makes you feel connected to the cosmos. It increases our fascination.
