Home Insurance Coverage D: What Is Loss of Use Coverage?

Loss of use coverage reimburses you for living expenses if your home is deemed unable to live in after being damaged or destroyed by a covered peril.

If your home is deemed uninhabitable, loss of use coverage helps you maintain your current standard of living by providing reimbursements for a place to live that is equivalent to the one you had to leave. It could cover costs for a hotel, home-sharing service, or simply renting another house or apartment in the interim.

It also covers basic living necessities like food, gas, boarding for your pets, moving costs, temporary storage and many other living expenses you wouldn’t have incurred if you were able to stay in your home.

Loss of use coverage is typically up to 20% of your policy’s dwelling limit.
