The search term Ozempic has more than 300 million views on TikTok with some users crediting the diabetes drug’s side effects for their weight-loss success. NBC’s Kristen Dahlgren reports for TODAY, and Dr. Natalie Azar joins to discuss the possible safety concerns.

Yeah, let’s not do this. I worked health insurance before and I can’t tell how many times I had calls of members freaking out because they couldn’t get their diabetic medication because it was out of stock. It’s already bad enough that there is a shortage of some diabetic medication brands.

I blame the shortages on the doctors. Some people only want it for weight loss while the people who need it for diabetes can't get it. The doctors need to be held accountable.

I'm a diabetic and I've been on ozempic 7 weeks and I saw/felt improvements just a few days after my 1st injection. It's amazing. I've lost a ton of weight, feel great, mood is better, more energy. My dad has had type 2 diabetes all my life. He started ozempic about a year ago and have seen him improve immensely!! It’s so disheartening to hear this news story. This is real life and peoples medication… he goes thru the VA and even they’re late on shipping meds on time as well and shortages. (Insulin, heart medication, critical to peoples health, etc.) 😔😤

I'm type 1 diabetic and lost insulin resistance over a year ago, and since taking ozempic my blood sugar and insulin leves have improved significatly ...my health was better than ever. In portugal we are suffering a shortage from this medicine because of these reasons, people with money getting them "under the table" for weight loss...i've been 3 weeks since ozempic and got hospitalized for my high blood sugar because no ammout of insulin would get it down. It's disgusting and ridiculous because money does run this world, but people have no ideia the reality of diabetic people.

Same thing with people hoarding hydroxychloroquine during the height of the pandemic and people like myself, those with autoimmune diseases who needed it, couldn't get it. Social media is a detriment to society.

I’m a diabetic, been on Ozempic for over a year, but recently haven’t been able to get it because it’s unavailable. It’s not ok for people to use if not a diabetic, especially just to lose 10-15 pounds. Someone like myself finally found a prescription that doesn’t make me sick and now it’s unavailable.

I started taking Ozempic for DM in Feb /2022, My A1C at the time was 8.9. Today, my A1C is 6.4 and the added bonus was 37lbs weight loss. Yes, it has the GI side effects, but controlling my blood sugar was my goal....I am now on Metformin 500 mg 1 every day and Ozempic once a week for DM control! It works for me.

This is terrible. I'm a pharmacy technician and it's currently on back order. I've had so many patients almost in tears because they can't find ozempic anywhere. Also this can be very dangerous.

I've had to call different pharmacies to get my medicine for diabetes. This is true and making it harder for those of us that NEED it for diabetes.

Quick fix - this med was meant to help Type 2 sufferers. Once you stop taking them, the weight comes back unless you change your behavior and exercise.

It saved me. I’m diabetic and it has helped me so much. I was on it for 5 months and stopped once I lost the weight I need to. I have been off ozempic for 15 months now and have not regained any weight. My diabetes is so much better controlled.
