The world’s largest aircraft, the Antonov AN-225, has been destroyed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials, generating alarm and sadness among the aviation world, in which it occupies almost cult status.

The enormous aircraft, named “Mriya,” or “dream” in Ukrainian, was parked at an airfield near Kyiv, when it was attacked by “Russian occupants,” Ukrainian authorities said, adding that they would rebuild the plane.

“Russia may have destroyed our ‘Mriya’. But they will never be able to destroy our dream of a strong, free, and democratic European state. We shall prevail!” wrote Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Twitter.

I remember so many people thinking the world was going to end in 2012, we're now an entire decade past 2012 though now look what our world has come to!

Antonov AN-225 did not go to any airshow. Airshows were held where "Mriya" reached
RIP Masterpiece.🇮🇳🇺🇦

Why the hell didn't they take off when the attack on Ukraine was imminent. Or within the first or second day of the conflict?? I mean they must've know that this was going to get targeted more or less immediately, since it's one of the major objects of pride for the Ukrainian nation. Seems like the competence and foresight is sadly lacking within Ukraine. But I won't criticise them to harshly now, given the very dire situation and suffering they're going through. Although, this plane would've definitely been quite useful to have now for bringing in loads of munitions, tanks, missiles etc. from all the countries that's willing to send it. But perhaps not necessary at all. I don't know.. just a thought. And hey, better to have this plane than not, no matter what.

Father of AN-225 and AN-124 - Mr. Viktor Tolmachev a Russian born Engineer. He's the chief design engineer of these two aircrafts. Sorry Mr Tolmachev you own people destroyed your masterpiece.

Right now its hard to quantify the hatred I currently have against the putin regime for atracking and killing so many innocent people in Ukraine.

Please note I dont personally hate the russian people they are a kind and generous people I just hate putin and his hitler like stance over this conflict.

And while I am saddened to hear about the destruction of the An-225 at least there's hope as the 2nd un finished one is still not completely nconceivable that it could be built and fly.

And if that's the case then the An-225 program isnt dead.

Antonov Cargo Company never confirmed nor denied that it was destroyed. The first initial reports had stated it was a second unfinished AN-225 that was slowly being build-up over the last 15 years. I don't know whichever is true, but I know the fact that there was indeed unfinished plane on which in recent years they had started major works.
Edit: On this Sunday (27th February) Mriya captain Dmitryi Antonov (Дмитрий Антонов) stated on his personal facebook something about war and then below post added this: (copy-pasted) P.S. There are many rumors about Mriya's condition. Until there is reliable information, we do not believe in anything.
