Officials inside Ukraine are reporting the Antonov An-225 cargo plane has been destroyed in a Russian assault on an airfield near Kyiv. The Antonov An-225 was also called Mriya, which translates to “the dream” in Ukrainian. The Antonov An-225 Mriya was designed as part of the former Soviet Union's space program. Mriya was the only one completed. The Ukrainian Defense Industry estimates it will cost over $3 Billion to restore the plane. "The restoration shall be time consuming," they said.

Even though I’m not an aviation fan, this aircraft is iconic being the biggest one in our world. Really sad to see it destroyed

About a week before the invasion, I was obsessed with the model of this plane. The fact that I had no idea that it would be destroyed a week later is kind of shocking

This isn’t just about the Ukraine, this plane has been used by other countries all over the world to give aid and transport refugees. This was a hit to anyone else in need, and we should treat it accordingly.

This is very heartbreaking for the aviation community, and for the rest of the world.

Seeing an aircraft of history I always looked up to as a child destroyed like this is heartbreaking; this does not compare to the heartbreak of seeing innocent civilians and soldiers killed. This is the cruelty of war.

Rest in Peace, An-225 Mriya 1988-2022. You'll be missed by all the aviators around the world.

I remember this plane came to Toronto to drop of some COVID payload during the pandemic and it was all over the news. So many people were at the airport to see it live. Hope they rebuild it better than before!

This is honestly so sad. I loved that aircraft and its massive wings. I’m glad they’re repairing it. I hope the best for Ukraine 🇺🇦

This is heartbreaking. As a 13 year old girl who loves planes, and loves learning about them, it makes me so sad to realize this was destroyed. Imagine all the hard work put into this, just for it to be destroyed. 💔

I've known about the Antonov for many years

Crazy to see it's been destroyed because of an idiotic war
