Torrential rain from Storm Helene has ravaged parts of North Carolina and Tennessee - the latest south-eastern US states to suffer in a disaster that has killed at least 63 people.

More than 400 roads remain closed in North Carolina, where 10 people have died. Supplies are being airlifted to residents, state Governor Roy Cooper said.

Officials have continued their rescue missions with boats, helicopters and large vehicles to help those stranded in floodwaters.

The storm began as a hurricane - the most powerful on record to hit Florida's Big Bend, and moved north into Georgia and the Carolinas after making landfall overnight on Thursday.

Although Helene has weakened significantly, forecasters warn that high winds, flooding and the threat of tornadoes could continue.

It was absolutely surreal. My town and entire reality is changed. I’m in shock I think. How different this was to other storms is terrifying. The amount of cities and states impacted is hard to believe. I never lost power during the storm, but some only had theirs restored today in Tampa area. Many bridges are still closed and beaches not accessible. A lot of people are displaced.
The batteries in Teslas apparently don’t mix with salt water and things caught fire. I don’t even know how to describe it. Many people lost everything. It wasn’t a normal hurricane, the flooding was out of the ordinary. I am grateful to be alive. Many people will be needing help. Especially in North Carolina.
They said probably the most costly disaster ever. The recovery they’re saying if possible could take years.

God bless our brothers and sisters from America. Such a sad event.

We likely have hundreds dead. It’s bad bad. This is a very very preliminary estimate. We have a pregnant woman and two kids trapped in North Carolina, we don’t know if they’ll make it.

Rebuilding on these barrier islands knowing that they will again be devastated by surging water makes no financial sense 🫵🏼

AT Last - reasonable range and perspective on the storm's effects. I've never seen such proof of how broken-up and un-united the United States are that to get a 'national' account I have to go to the BBC. In America, reportage is very narrow and very local. Impossible to get the sort of reportage you'd expect for any nation impacted by such a widespread event.

You have to understand that the states of Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina are EACH larger than England, Florida significantly so, and South Carolina and Tennessee aren't much smaller, and other states are impacted as well.

You have to understand the area of infrastructure & roads destroyed, floods and major damage to homes & businesses is larger than all of the UK, even with the areas that missed the brunt of the storm — south Florida, eastern North Carolina (even then, many places outside the worst of the floods and windfield had winds approaching England's 1989 storm, even small tornados, and all those floodwaters have to go somewhere, either flooding rivers east to the Atlantic Ocean hitting towns and ports all the way, or west towards the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans.)

ironically, these are mostly Republican states some of whose governors have banned mention of climate change in schools and official insitutions, making it hard to plan .

We don't need a big red banner obscuring a large part of the screen, telling us about Rosie &&&$in' Duffield. One story at a time.
