The easiest way to get past the waves while surfing is to have a good duck- dive technique. A good goal to have is to be able to duck dive deep enough to get both you and your board under the wave without getting pulled backwards. Most people struggle with sinking their surfboard, so I have explained the one simple thing you can do to help with a good enough duck dive which will help you to enjoy every surf.

another important point that isn't explicitly mentioned but that I think is a good thing to think about is how your left foot helps create leverage with the water to get yourself deeper. kicking up through the water with your left foot actually helps push you down further

Wow after years of surfing I never noticed that sinking the tail was so important! Great Video.

Thank you, great content as always. I actually first saw this a few months back - this is the only tutorial I have come across which goes into why it's important to get and keep the tail down, which helped me tremendously. I'm 60kg and alternate between 2 boards which are both 39L. Not being able to confidently duck dive held me back from paddling further out for a long time (my local beach break is nicknamed "the wild West", and I'm not the type to venture out and just hope for the best...). This video helped me get into duck diving properly and over the months I have become more confident as I'm now able to navigate my way out whilst making sure I stay on my board (most of the time, anyway!).

Yup your left leg kick is very efficient, then when the wave hits it- you must get very deep. I can reliably get under reasonably solid waves, but might see if I can get the left leg deeper before I kick- it’s bound to help. Thx

Which board would be easiest to duckdive? A short, wide, thick board or a longer narrower board? Both with identical volume

Hey I'm having trouble pushing the board down with my arms, could it be because of my board or my body?

I’m surfing a 6’4 46 liters board, and I’m finding it hard to duck dive it.
Any tips for mid length boards?

What I want to know is if I'm going to get hit by a big wave should I let my board go or hold onto it? Also can duck diving only work with smaller waves?

I think the easiest way when learning is to just try and sink the whole board at once. Don't worry about getting the nose down first and then getting it up first at the end. If you can just sink the board straight down you'll do a decent job of getting under the wave. Once you've mastered this you can work on the scoop. The scoop is generally much more subtle than you think it is when you're starting out. The important thing at the start is just sinking the board as much as you can-get your body as far away from the board as you can and it'll sink.
