Programming was always my dream and I also took an Information Systems College here in Brazil, but I couldn't keep up, mostly because of finances. I was traveling 5hours a day to attend college, on top of the study duration and 8h work. I was a zombie for a while and then drop out. Now I restarted by myself and this month I started working to a Scottish start up as a Frontend developer volunteer. I am gaining no money, but I am gaining experience in React, Next.js, Axios and most important English. I believe I will succeed in have a paid job soon.

I'm an international student struggling to find internship position at a college in Canada. Your story motivated me work harder, thanks!

After teaching English in Japan for 5 years I decided to start learning to code.
I'm 8 months in but probably only know half of what I need to land my first job. It's hard to study just in my free time on top of working a full-time job in a completely unrelated industry.
I envy you.

You really inspiring me. I'm a student in last year at computer science and I have to say that this 3 years of university were waste of time. Now I'm struggling to get a job on front end, it's really hard but I keep trying. Thank you for sharing your story!

my degree's lecturer is harsh and often call out student's name randomly, if the student fail to answer the question( btw this is our first semester so we barely knew how to code not to mention other student who were from different course) she will get mad and blame us for not doing enough exercise. We ended up doing all the exercises before her class. xD

i learn both front and backend for more than 12 if you are really passionate about coding you really need to sit down and give it more time and dedication.

Thanks for sharing your story. It's very important for people to know that teachers affect our perception of our capabilities. It's so reassuring that you believed in yourself against all odds. I have been struggling with self confidence and this video really helped.

React is just memorizing a weird syntax, not programming. It's a high-level framework, leaving all the programming-related stuff behind the scenes. For one to become a real programmer, they should get used to programming in low-level languages such as Assembler and C, they should know how memory, pointers and garbage collector work. Just by learning high-level languages and frameworks, one won't be come a real programmer.

Dig deeper guys, be curious about what's going on under the hood and you'll be exposed to real programming. Don't be blinded by all these high-level and heavy frameworks. Also, I recommend going into AI/ML as chances are these two will replace Front-End Development in the foreseeable future.

And the last thing, learning about Data Structures and Algorithms will definitely make you an exceptional programmer.

Books I recommend: The ANSI C Programming Language, The Art of Assembly Language, Computer System Architecture.
Data Structures Course I recommend: Data Structures Using C and C++ by FreeCodeCamp.
Algorithms Course I recommend: Algorithms by Abdul Bari on YouTube.

I didn't mention anything about OS, I definitely recommend exploring the Linux world as the most of the percentage of servers in the world are running on the Linux OS, meaning when you've developed a software, you'll need to upload it to the world, so others can see it. There's a good book for that as well, called 'Linux Bible'.

Also, whoever is trying to get into Programming and has no idea what that dark magic world is all about, there is a video on YouTube by George Hotz called 'what is programming' in which he explains what Programming is.

And if that video is too confusing, then check out 'Introduction to Programming and Computer Science - Full Course' by FreeCodeCamp on YouTube.

Hi Benny, I find your story really inspiring, especially that you're living in Germany. I am also living in Germany and I'm hoping to get a job as a frontend developer this year. Would it be possible to share your internship resources, I would like to apply to some and where exactly in Germany are you, perhaps we can connect sometime. Thank you.
