The Big Picture - Sri Lanka Crisis Deepens

Sri Lanka’s parliament passed a no-confidence motion against newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on 7 November, presenting a standoff with the opposition and throwing the country deeper into turmoil. Deputies from Rajapaksa’s party rejected the voice vote as illegal, saying it wasn’t scheduled and that the pro-China former strongman would remain in office. It wasn’t immediately clear what President Maithripala Sirisena, who triggered the crisis by firing Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and naming Rajapaksa to the job last month, would do now. Sirisena dissolved parliament last week and ordered elections as a way to break the deadlock but the Supreme Court ordered a suspension of that decree on Tuesday until it had heard petitions challenging the decree as unconstitutional. Wickremesinghe, who had refused to vacate the prime minister’s residence, said he intended to discharge his official responsibilities now that he had proved his majority in parliament. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said the no-confidence vote against Rajapaksa was supported by 122 members of the 225-member house.

I don't understand why people have a problem with Smita mam. Yes, she could go a little slow. But apart from that, she is really good at her job, has an indepth understanding, explains properly and is abreast with the latest developments. Her clarity on important issues is commendable. I would suggest to watch her on some others rstv debates before asking for her to be removed. It would be our lose. Please keep calling her.

Smita Sharma gives good chronology of events but without any real insight. We need some one like the ambassador n professor in her place to make the debate more insight full.

According to Sri Lanka constitution the ruling party has to get the majority of the parliament. Newly appointed PM's party does not have the majority of the Parliament. This is the crisis in the Parliament. President requested for VOICE VOTE but Mahinda Rajapaksa's party won't accept it as they want to carry out the power. Thanks

Prof.Muni is WRONG, that Rajapaksha's clan got 64% majority in last election. It shows the majority is with Rajapaksha now, if the current government got a massive defeat in local election, then PM will be resigned if it is UK. But Wikramasinghe tries to stay in power with his eagerness. Basically, Wikramashinge is going to destroy the country, we can see development of last 3 years. GDP was declining, dolor was going up. There is no solution except Rajapaksha at the moment to save the country.

I speak hurriedly like Smita Sharma ma'am does; and I don't like it. Really liking the way Ambassador Sharma speaks though; that calmness I wish to replicate.

I'm of the view that sooner or later we will see a govt being run by Rajapaksha as president and Ranil.w as prime minister. Coz we have to agree to the fact that rajapaksha ultimately wants to be the president.
