It’s so hard to not be too negative with a negative boss.

The humility that Jocko possesses is unprecedented! I wish I could have so much of it, but I don't wanna go through what a soldier like him has gone through... Amazing! And this level of adaptability... Everything he says is so logical, but so damn hard to do.

I would like to hear how this is nuanced into the private/ corporate sector. Military knows at the end of the day its life or death...to be blunt some corporates only believe in maintaining an image ( people are secondary) ..there are different critical mass points to effect change ( corporate tends to reward narcissistic behaviour)

Really trying to employ these strategies at work right now. I personally feel, or my ego at least feels, that I’ve been going above and beyond my job duties and responsibilities. Examples include working extra hours, being a proactive team member, arriving early, staying late, supporting my team etc. All of this extra effort is either not recognized, unappreciated, or somehow I get admonished by my boss for doing too much? Should I instead slack off, adopt a lukewarm work ethic, and merely meet the minimum standard in order to find success? Sometimes it seems that accolades are given at my job for doing just this, meeting the bare minimum. I recently was given corrective training for having not contacting law enforcement or CIT when dealing with a violent and aggressive youth. Mind you I was at the youths home with his family, but otherwise by myself without support. I was threatened by the kid with a large blunt object, and in short was able to resolve the situation on my own. I wrote my report and sent it up the chain of command, but got in trouble because I didn’t immediately inform the entire world what was going on? By the way I took complete responsibility for not calling for backup in the moment and told my boss I’d do better in the future. I am however extremely frustrated. I guess that’s what I get for giving an effort.

So true, when my ego got me I failed every time.
When I focused on the job at hand all was good, we excelled.
We got the job done and shined.
It is all about the work, if you love your part in the work, the rest is Bull crap.
Just my thought.

For the record Echo explains things in such a precise way, but the reason I commend him: he's able to reinvite the subject in a broad way while intelligently touching on the key arguments at the same time while information is constatly being thrown at you.

The best thing I found when dealing with a shitty boss is to do everything my own way whenever I have the freedom. Then when theyre around I do everything they tell me to and blame them when it goes wrong.

It sounds like this Q came from someone on active duty. And I'm starting to notice that a lot of Jocko's advice can tend not to work in an institution where nobody gets fired and nobody is allowed to leave.

@Jocko
This is a good strategy overall I like it, it shows strength of character and an understanding of the overall goal. The issue is that not getting noticed for your hard work time and time again erodes motivation and morale for you and your team. If the hard work goes unnoticed for days and weeks and months and maybe even years, people are going to look to work elsewhere to get the proper recognition. People who do strong work deserve the proper recognition for their efforts and results, that is how systems and processes get stronger, more adaptable and more enduring.

I was hired into a company in 2018 as a high level manager, and I walked into PRECISELY this scenario. Precisely. And this is precisely how I handled it. Literally exactly. In the end, THE boss became a much, much better leader, my team grew sales by 300% in one year, and I doubled my income and earned the respect of the entire company. Jocko this is spot on.

You're cultivating a generation of men born into poor leadership. Jagged pill to swallow here. Thanks for the clip Jocko
