The timeliness of this video is kinda freaky. Super helpful and informative without being too prescriptive. You guys consistently put out quality content and it’s much appreciated. Thank you so much!

Loving this series on the business side of photography. I’d love to see one on contracts! Where do you get one? Do you have to find a lawyer - is that just a cost one has to deal with?

Recently received nothing for an editorial shoot plus the added bonus of not being able to use any images from the shoot (even ones not making it to print) for the next 12 months. What a great time to be alive.

It’s great you added business expenses, fixed and variable. Respectably, I think it should always be your starting point, and you have to include your desired salary/cost of living into that. For instance. Your Fixed business expenses(for simplicity sake)($5, 000) + variable, estimate ($5, 000) + salary/cost of living ($5, 000) = $15, 000 then take a realistic estimate of jobs you will get per year, 30 and divid your $15, 000 by 30 to get your cost of doing business. In this example $500. Use your own numbers, you will learn them after 1 to 2 years in business. These are just examples.

That’s your starting point anything less you are loosing money. If you don’t think $5, 000 is enough money to pay your mortgage, other bills, car payment, food, so and and so forth, you have to increase your cost of living/salary. Also don’t forget, which he mentioned the 30% tax in the US as well as money for retirement or health care. I didn’t won’t these items to be lost in your example, because if you only charge to cover your business expenses, you won’t last long in the industry, just because you won’t make enough money to survive.

Daniel Inskeep taking over MangoStreet! I loved this video, it feels grounded in reality more than a lot of what you can find on youtube about this topic

I appreciate content like this! If it’s something you have in mind I would love to know more about commercial photography from how much to charge to things like copyright!

I work with commercial brands.
I charge a day rate + each edited photo, instead of a package deal with X number of photos.

I dont say that I will be providing 40-60 images. Instead, I say that I will do the shoot, and the client can select which photos they want edited and to keep.
Yes, they see the unedited photos (with basic adjustments), but they get to choose how many and which they want.

Not sure if this is the best practice. But, it also means less work for me as I edited only the photos they want.
This only works for commercial clients. Not for portraits or weddings.

Great video as always! One thought that came to mind (respectfully): I know Asking for a budget is commonly taught, but it always seemed weird to me, and gives off a vibe of trying to squeeze out every penny you can depending on what they’re wanting to spend. If i asked the price of a specific Corvette model at the dealership and they said, “well what’s your budget?” I’d just walk out the door, lol. I’d just want to know the price of the product or service, not feel like the merchant is trying to inflate their pricing to my wallet size

I like you business model very customer service oriented.

Just an observation. I know other photographers/ videographer say never to ask what's your budget, rather that structured pricing is how they present the cost. If the client says that the price is a bit high they can remove items from their structured pricing. Just want to hear your thoughts.
