The funny thing is now we learned that inklings never even knew Marina was an octoling. They just thought she was an odd looking inkling.

The octo expansion actually explains this in the texts, it’s amazing how accepting pearl was of marina saying it doesn’t matter if she’s an octoling as long as she’s her friend. Ya’ll we need more people like pearl in this world.

It's revealed in Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion that Octolings aren't brainwashed, but just indoctrinated since childhood, but the Calamary Inkantation the Squid Sisters sang during Splatoon 1's final boss resonated so much in their soul that a good part of the Octolings started to question the state of never-ending war against the Inklings DJ Octavio got the Octarians in, leading them to desert ; that what happened to Marina, but also Agent 8 as we learn throught the mem cakes.

OCTO EXPANSION!!!
Here’s my theory.
So. We all know that SPOILERS: you get real close to getting smoothied into this goo, to create better life form. But, how does this process really work?

Well, I think that when you enter the facility, you get your memories wiped. That ensures that only the best will emerge form the tests. For exampl, if you were a high trained octoling, of course you would nail the tests. However, you get wiped so you have an equal chance as everyone else. If you pass these tests, you become part of the goo. If you fa-TEST FAILED-il, you become sanitized. The way this process works is that you go into a test tube (like the one in the player select menu) filled with the goo. It turns you into this perfect little minion. This also causes skin and hair colour to change. After this is complete, you get your memory wiped, and you get programmed to work for the facilities tests. Those are the ocotlings you fight in certain levels. (Like girl power station. Man I hated it so much.) The case with Agent 8 was that, she was found fighting Agent 3, and she showed potential. She was then Squidnapped and taken to the facility, and she was wiped (per the process I talked about earlier) She then did the tests, you know the rest. Now what about Dedf1sh?

We know that she wandered into the facility, -like the description about her said- and no workers knew anything about her. They then found out that she spend her time as a DJ. They then saw that she had no potential at all, and Sanitized her. In her description, it states : ‘little of her former self remains’ I think that when you are wiped, you keep some basic memories, like your interests. But these interests are outweighed by the programming that happens to you. So she feels the need not to DJ, even though she remembers it. Kinda.

After you are sanitized, you fight in the tests, like I said. This is because Commander Tartar needs enough SPOILERS: goo to cover Inkopolis. The sanitized octolings also fight in Here Mode to find more octolings to join the tests.

I think the way you are programmed is by the Glasses. We know that SPOILERS: Callie is the final boss of Octo Canyon, and this is because she was brainwashed by DJ Octavio. The Shades Callie wears brainwashed her, and I think it’s the same with the other octolings. The glasses are put on, and they do the work. (I think Erickson Gaming did a video taking this part further. I think the thumbnail has Marina on it if you want to go watch it)

Now, what if Agent 8 was ALREADY sanitized? In the start of the Octo Expansion, Captain Cuttlefish states that you were humming ‘Callimari Inkantation’ right before you came to. What if Agent 8 was freed my the song, (like Marina) but then got Squidnapped back to the facility? I think that not all octolings escaped. Only the lucky. Most got taken back, to redo the tests. This might also explain Marina’s glowing fingers, which are blue. The sanitized octolings are blue. When Marina was freed, her skin went back to normal. Well, most of it. That’s also why the end of her hair is blue. Because not all original colour was returned.

And then Octo Expansion explained everything.

Actually it' still seems like the Octolings that make it to Inkopolis still pretend to be inklings, being afraid of what would happen if people knew what they were. Most likely Inklings would be confused about Octolings actually being alive, and maybe scared by the revelation since they were convinced the Octarians were extinct.

As said in the sunken scroll showing Marina it says many octarians had a change of heart that day and at the end of Splatoon 1 the end credits showed Inklings and Octolings getting along. It's very possible that the Octolings in Splatoon 2 are being brainwashed just as Callie was. Having them be playable in a future update would be great and make sense as we have defeated Octavio once again setting the Octolings free. Besides I just LOVE the Octoling design and would love to have the option to play as one! Hopefully in OCTOber?

I think Callie WAS upset after the Splatfest results and DID intentionally separate from Marie. I think at this point DJ Octavio saw his chance because the two were separated(power in numbers and all that). So Callie being vulnerable, he easily hypnotized her. After Callie’s Hypnoshades were knocked off, it still took some convincing by Marie to get Callie to join her, hinting towards the fact that Callie was still feeling some emotional unrest. So I think the driving point of Callie’s siding with DJ Octavio was a combination the Hypnoshades and Callie’s emotional inner conflict after the results of the Splatfest.

Hey dude.
If you get octo expansion, it explains more of why octolings are bad. Marina Ida says that the Calamari Inktation had changed her life. And in the beginning, *cough cough* SPOILERS *cough* a totally innocent octoling is taking a walk, LISTENING TO THE CALAMARI INKTATION, when Captain Cuttlefish gets agent 3 to attack him/her. When he wakes up captain cuttlefish is standing over the octoling, which has lost its memory. Then captain cuttlefish mentions that the octoling was humming the calamari Inktation. On chat sessions 6, 7, and 10 it talks about octolings being in inkoplis. If you buy octo expansion, maybe make a 2nd part to this video adding to the theory. And when you beat the final boss in octo expansion, you have the option to play as an octoling.(And yes, I know octo expansion wasn't out yet when this video was published. Stay Fresh~!)
