This is a bit strange but hear me out.

It’s thought that the reason Agent 8 is not hostile to the inklings is because they heard Calamari Incantation. This could mean that Agent 8 was previously sanitized and was brought out of it thanks to the song (along with the character creation screen and the fact that they have a mild case of amnesia)

This would require a few changes to pull off, but what if when you first start playing, the octoling starts off as sanitized, but as you progress through each level (without Marina’s help, so you get the mem cakes) you progressively regain your natural ink and skin color, signifying the fact that you’re regaining your free will more and more and the sanitization process is being reversed.

I’m aware this is a bit deep, but I think it would be pretty cool. It would also have a way to:
1: Explain what happened to 8 before meeting gramps
2: Go more in depth about what sanitization is
3: Actually help to explain what happened to Dedf1sh and why she still retains her memory
4: Maybe have a more significant reason to complete all the levels without help than to get a toothpick 🤷🏽‍♂️

Spaltoon 2: playable octolings..
Spaltoon 3: all about hidden and important secrets in the game
Spaltoon 4: new characters and new designs and new squid sisters
Spaltoon 5: squid kids being adults.
Spaltoon 6: no more squid sisters...
But since everyone in the comments talking about sanitized octolings... Spaltoon 3 won't have this type of stuff lol
