I have a very similar story as he does, regarding the "Becoming the Manager" section.. I was a Software Engineer in Test for a Health Care software company in Canada, I was in charge of Selenium Automation, API automation, Pipeline testing, etc. I wanted to move into a CSM role, went and got certified, starting being a Scrum master for this team as well as a Tester. Fast forward 2 weeks, my Product Owner quit, left without warning and we had no project Manager at the time.
I didn't know the PO had quit, we were under the impression they were on leave or sick so I carried on doing Scrum Master duties. One day I got told "Yeah, he's not coming back, you are taking over the team in addition to your current responsibilities".
Fast forward another 2 months I was promoted to Engineering Manager... Continuing to do everything I was doing as Scrum master/Tester/Product Owner/Release manager.. Now I am doing this for 3 teams and I am completely Drained.

I am watching this video, because I don't what my role is. I haven't finished the video yet, but it has been insightful so far. I felt the urge to comment because of my experiences.

Taking in the responsibilities of an EM before being promoted is the best way to be trusted when the opportunity comes up. Very true 😊 👏

Fantastic video. Someone quitting was how I ended up as EM after being at a new job about 3 weeks. Inside I was like, is this really happening? All the credit for how well it went, goes to the brilliant team I had.

Tom was supposed to spend 6 months as an IC to understand the system/codebase but this changed right at the start and he went straight into EM duties. How did this impact his initial strategy of wanting to understand the codebase. Did he have a feeling of being insufficient?

I have bought algoexpert course recently thanks to its ads you can see anywhere and other's recommendations and I found the course is exactly and unbelievably awesome. I, however, watch video contents from algoexpert very slowly, despite my location from China. I watch youtube video contents normally and so I think that my network is ok. So I wonder that whether this is a CDN problem. China is home to millions of programmers, a mega market which is becoming your potential customers.

Taking up initiatives doing the role of a manager to prepare for when the actual EM opportunity comes, sounds just like what it takes for an IC to get promoted: "consistently performing in the N+1 level"
