Is Studying Engineering Hard?

There seems to be this stereotype that studying engineering is hard. I’m not surprised that people think so because the internet is flooded with ridiculous memes. So in this video, I’m going to explain why engineering isn’t as hard as everyone makes it out to be with 6 reasons! Timestamps are as follows:

00:00 Intro
00:37 Major Relativity
01:42 The Math in Engineering
03:09 No Problem is Too Difficult to Solve
03:48 Naturally Smart vs Hardworking
05:00 Comparing Engineering to Law & Medicine
05:56 It’s NOT a Badge of Honour

ABOUT ME:
My name is Tamer Shaheen and I am a recent mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Waterloo, currently working as a Mechanical Design Engineer. I like to make videos about university/college, engineering, and personal development. Thank you so much for watching!!

This was my biggest insecurity, not being smart enough to study engineering. I have hard work ethic, but I wasn't good at math growing up. I am now almost 28, starting school for EE. Thanks for the motivation.

Yes, actually I entered Engineering without much knowledge about math because I studied computer related on high school. I also encountered failing on Thermodynamics, but now I'm 3rd year Mechanical Engineering student. It only reminds me what my first professor on college said to me, "Math is a skill, means you can excel at it through process". Thank you Tamer for inspiring me on building up myself as Engineer soon.

The type of math that is used in undergraduate engineering courses is usually much easier than what pure math majors have to learn. Most engineering students have no idea how nightmarish math can get.

I thought I was strong at math in high school, but then I went to university (in London) where the class was majority Chinese and Singaporean, and I got absolutely owned. With hindsight, it's crazy how little math is taught in British schools. I had to work my ass off to slowly catch up to my university classmates who were literally sleeping through every math class (or not showing up at all).

Ive always been pretty bad at math because of how lazy of a student i was growing up. I went into engineering because i adore physics, but math is obviously a pretty crucial factor for this. And while i am definitely struggling to become better at math, i have the will power to put in the work so i can in shaa allah become a mechanical engineer. Thank you for motivating me with ur videos!!

Man bro, throughout the video you uttered the word “practice”.. Practice takes time and diligence which requires effort. And that’s probably why many do not major in engineering, because you have little to no room to slack off. Great video my boy! 🔥

Before watching this video I was shocked at how you could have such a viewpoint. But you made some pretty good points to why it’s not so hard. I would agree that anyone can do engineering. But I’m not so sure about an engineering degree. Something I felt that was brushed over a little quickly was how it’s like putting 7/8 years of studying into 3/4 years. I think that’s what precisely makes an engineering degree so hard.

I like it when you break every concept down so I can fully understand what you’re talking about. That’s what I love about this channel. Keep up the good work! 😀

Been struggling in math and only math but it’s mainly because I haven’t put in the time I need, putting in the practice for basic principles like you said at 3:00 is insanely true. Thank you for the video.

This was really helpful and enlightening to hear a level headed, honest, and fair point of view on the topic. Thank you Tamer!!

Thank you for finally expressing what I've felt so long. Engineering isn't a lot of work if you compare it to High School programs like AP and IB. It's only a lot of work compared to other courses.

Hey Tamer! I just wanna say, holy shit your videos are so helpful. I'm currently a senior in high school and I started binge watching all your videos last week. I'm a committed student for Computer Engineering at Penn State and I was very nervous. Your videos are so reassuring and I'm definitely going to come back to these videos to look back on what you've done to help me while I'm at college. I've even watched your job interview videos to get a sense of what it's like. And I'm definitely going to be looking forward to your next videos as well. All the best bro!! 😁

Moral of the story: Just put in the work and you'll be fine, don't worry too much as long as you're studying properly

Studying engineering is not just hard it's hardworking.

If you are terrible at math, but are very good at studying, you are usually much better off that the naturally talented kids.

I think the defining recognition that must be made is that there is a difference between a difficult major and a high work load major. I think few would argue against engineering being a high workload major, but as far as engineering concepts go, many are not insanely challenging. Granted, I haven't gotten to a lot of the higher level courses yet, so maybe I'm completely wrong, but so far through my college career, I've found what is said in this video to be very true. Prior knowledge is crucial, but with a good foundation, it's not that engineering is hard, it's that all of the other majors compared to engineering are ridiculously easy.

Totally agree with this, if you want a really hard degree study math or physics lmao. I'm in my junior year of mechanical engineering and decided to get a math minor as it's only 2 extra courses. Both of the math classes I took were way more involved than most of the math I have done in engineering. Writing up an induction proof or learning graph theory can be very abstract and intangible. All the math in engineering directly relates to the real world and I feel like it makes it 10 times easier to solve.

God send! Could you do a video analysing Law, Medicine and Engineering in more depth in the future?

Failed out of mech engineering in 2019 before being diagnosed with adhd (I'm also just not that great at math). Thinking about going back. Thank you for this video it was very motivating.

I’m a sophomore in meche and honestly I think my math skills are one of the only things that have gotten me this far in my degree.

Studying engeering is not hard. The thing is, University the way it works is quantity over quality, meaning that they dont guide you with the real knowledge you need to organize your mind. In other words, University bombs you with concepts, so you end up not having your mind organized (meaning you only know how to solve book examples). Just knowing bareley superficial concepts that you remember to have studied at one point on your life, but dont end up assimilating.
