This is just a thought as 2 photographers using both cameras have had theirs successfully repaired with a reinstall of the firmware i am just giving the information to others which may help you if your camera is doing similar and this may fix it.

My a7rIV (and 16-35GM) recently went to Digicam in South Australia after I was swamped by a rogue wave on a local beach on the East Coast of Australia. I was knocked off my feet and the camera and lens were fully submerged in the white water and sand. I took the camera home and ran it under the tap for a few minutes to wash off the sand and salt water fully expecting it to be an insurance job. To my great surprise, the camera still worked and auto-focussed without issue. My insurer agreed with my decision to send it off for inspection/repair as I wasn't confident that I wouldn't perhaps have issues in the future if salt water had penetrated critical components (as it had). Digicam did a fantastic job and before returning it, installed the latest firmware. I've previously only ever used my 200-600 with my a7rIII because I'd heard of the focussing issues with the r4 (from you and others). Tried my r4 with the lens a few weeks back when we had a big swell (I shoot surfers) and it performed flawlessly. Obviously, I wasn't using eye-tracking but the camera had no issues tracking surfers in waves from 400m or so. The files from my 16-36GM look "crisper" as well (although it may well be the placebo effect).

I upgraded to the sony a7riva from the a7riii early last summer. I have the 200-600 and have been struggling with the combo. I kept my 100-400, which it definitely works better on. After working on my technique and doing a few tests, I decided it was me, and that the 60 MP sensor was very demanding. Until about two weeks ago - I checked to see if there were any new firmware updates. There haven’t been any for the 7R4A, but there is a firmware update for the 200-600 that is specifically for the 7RV: 1) “Improves the Image Stabilization performance when used with the ILCE-7RM5 camera” and 2) “Improves operational stability”. After some test shots at my bird feeder and then out in the field shooting cranes, geese and hawks (big relatively slow moving), I found my camera is capable of beautiful and sharp shots with that lens combo. I’ll do some more testing, but would like to know if others see the same result after updating the 200-600.

I have the same issue! So frustrating. Mines the a7iv. The eye tracking is horrible now. And that was the whole reason I bought the camera! Is it possible to reinstall the software on our own? Or do we have to send it in.

I bought mine used in May and have been blaming it on me still learning the camera but I’m convinced I’ve got the same problem. Every lens I try I have soft focus and the further away I am the worse it is. I’m sure it’s not covered under warranty so sending it in would probably be pricey. I’m so bummed.

Hello, I feel You, I went for event and I realised same issue - autofocus had so much errors with focusing on iris that I'm certain this is not issue of user but it's not. I hope that Sony will fix that problem fast as possible

I was tonight editing my first paid video with my A74 with Tamron 17-28 and halfway through my video I walked in front of camera to move something and the camera focused on me, then when out of frame, instead of reacquiring eye focus on my talent, it focused on the wall behind her. I didn’t notice and now I have to do some creative editing to fix my video. At first I thought it’s the lens but now I saw this video. I switched from Canon mainly for this?!?!

Does the problem still exist? Wanted to buy a 7IV or 7RIV with a 200-600 because it’s just in my price range

FX3 - ignoring autofocus settings. I‘ll try your Tipp and send it in for wipe & reinstall.

Thanks for highlighting this issue. Any correlation between how people installed the firmware on the cameras. Windows vs Mac for example?

I'm getting some sharp shots and then some that look very muddy with the A7iv and the 200-600mm. Since I've already updated to the most advanced firmware. Is it possible for me to put another download of that firmware onto a card and update to the same firmware but a different example? Maybe I'd have to get an older version and put it back on and then reinstall the new version from a different source? I'd hate to have to send my camera in just for a firmware reinstall. Thanks for any info and best of luck to you!

My A7 IV has problems with the lens/focus settings. Occasionally while using it, it suddenly chooses to be an idiot and no longer "sense the camera lens" so all focus options are grayed out and stuck on "manual focus" (manually focusing with the lens during this time does not even work.. its as if the lens Is not even there.)
And there is NO explanation for it, I hardly find anyone with the same issues so I don't see a way to fix it. I am so annoyed.

I've brought it to a local Sony repairs shop but they could not recreate the issue because it was gone when I brought it. It comes and goes at random and it is extremely stupid.. any ideas?

I dont know it this is the same issue but I was out shooting an eagle today. Im not a pro at all, so I blame myself for my camera not being "perfect".
Sony a7iv and sony 200-600. Eagle flew and I started to shoot. Held focus and saw the green points locked onto the eagle.
When I review the photos on the camera, it zoomed in BEHIND the bird when I pressed that "focus point zoom" button.
I used zone area and HI+ speed, and bird was pretty far away from me.
What on earth am I doing wrong ? Im using what the professional youtuber bird shooters use - and their shots are perfect always.
Must admit it was freezing and NO sun and very over clouded. but if I can see the focus points are locked onto the bird, whats wrong then ?
Sorry for the long post. Hope for a simple quick settings tip here :D

Is this issue affecting the A7RIV-A too? Currently have the 200-600 on a a7iii but looking to upgrade to the a7r4-a. Was almost set to pull the trigger on ordering and then heard of these issues :(

remember not all wires are equal, some work for charging or file transfer some both, i learned that the hard way with the cell phones, so far my 7r4 seems ok.
