Even in 2022 some of the best reviews and comparisons out there. Love the no BS approach 👍

I'd go for the A7RIV used. The price is decent. You get basically 2 lenses when you use crop mode and FF mode. e.g I use a 50mm 1.2 + 135mm 1.8 combo and can get 75mm and 243mm. The photo fps is better with the A7RIV. On top of that, you get the A7RIV because with the hi-res, you can generate another image/story within a shot. (A composition within a composition). You can get 2 images or more from 1 shot. That's the power of the A7RIV 61MP.

For video, the fake S-cinetone works with the a7RIV as well. So you're not losing much...

Great review and appreciate your video!

Great video, as always! Appreciate the comparison. The interesting component for me is how close the ISO performance is between the two. Also the difference is AF performance in stills is closer than I anticipated. Doesn't make the decision easier, unless you're a video first shooter. Thanks again!

Fantastic review. I use A7S III for video but the A7R IV A for high res photography with my Sigma lenses !

Was thinking about buying an used A73. However, after browsing all those used A73s and realizing how good Sony cam holds its value, I decided to go for the new ones. Thanks for the great video, the A7IV it is then :D

Have both, and primarily use the A7RIV for stills, and the A7IV is my side camera. Usually a wide angle sits on the A7RIV and a telephoto on the A7IV.

Where I find the A7IV useful is a few points:
* As you noted, low ISO is roughly the same and ISO between 3200 and 12, 800 seems a bit better to my eyes on the A7IV
* Autofocus and tracking is much better with the longer telephotos in sub-optimal light with the A7IV, especially with the 200-600mm. The more reliable focusing to me is more useful than being able to crop (and it’s not like 33mp is bad for cropping either).
*Smaller files. This is hard to understate. Especially if you do a lot of full speed bursts
* Related, the A7IV just writes faster. The message “writing to memory card, unable to operate” kills me with the A7RIV, even with a fast UHS-II card and compressed raw.

Seriously my only one complaint with the A7IV is that it’s limited to just 10fps in burst mode. Even 15fps would be a noticeable improvement. Sadly to get anything faster you need to jump up to the A9II, and that’s another $2000.

That said, the A7RIV’s resolution is lovely, and the fact that I can run the APS-C 70-350mm lens (effectively a 105-525mm) when I can’t be bothered to lug around the 200-600mm and still get 26mp is fantastic. Really, being able to run any primes as a quasi-zoom is great. That 20mm f/1.8 looks good at 20mm, but it also works great as a 30mm in APS-C mode.

But I think the A7IV is still great for stills…. It just falls behind the A7RIV because that’s probably still one of the best dedicated stills cameras available at that price point.

Please test the eyeAF on the a7iv. Lots of people showing that it front focuses under certain conditions. Which are at around f1.8 or faster, closeup headshots (so face needs to fill in most of the frame). Hit rate is about 20-50%. Other Sony models are doing much better under same conditions (90%). A7iii is even doing much better (owners of both are confirming this). FB has a Group just for this issue alone. They've gotten word from Sony that a FW is on the way but we still need to let them and potential consumer be aware, otherwise Sony may just be trying to quiet everyone down and not release one. Thanks in advance!

Great video. I aim to purchase the a7R IV-A this May, having just completed my GM prime collection(14mm thru135mm). However, I Won't be parting with my trusty a7iii as it has and continues to serve me well. You've mentioned on several occasions that you prefer the Sony flip-style screen over the fully articulated ones. Call me old-school, but I couldn't agree more regarding the flip-screen usefulness for my purpose and style of photography.

Other reviewers of the a7R IV-A seem to have reservations about the lack of RAW file size options. Since my plan to purchase this model hinges on capturing the most detail/information possible in my images, I don't view this as a concern. From a real-world perspective, have you found file size to be an issue?

My problem with the A7RIV is that there is no option for smaller RAW files. The A7RV solved this problem.

I currently have the original A7RIV, wishing they put that nicer screen from the RVIA update in the original, but oh well! The viewfinder is still jaw dropping though. It is the best viewfinder I have ever used (though I never used the A7SIII!)

The crop mode is honestly my favorite part about the A7RIV. Makes me need fewer lenses for most work!
