In this video I'm breaking down one of the most underrated features of the new Sony cameras - Aperture Drive. It's available on A7IV, A1, A9II and A7RIV. The right setting will improve how camera is focusing when using higher aperture values.

I just discovered this setting today, it makes a huge difference in my Sony A1 with Sony 50mm 1.2 GM. Just got this amazing lens for my A1, and as I did my first studio shoot, I noticed a disappointing miss focus occurrence in lets say 3 out of 10 shots, and as faith may have it, they were amazing expression/poses, I was shocked! This morning I decided to try checking focus settings, I also did a test with mi prior lens in this range, the Zeiss 55 1.8, and I also noticed some miss focus, so this indicated the A1 being at fault. So, I dug in the Focusing menu, and tried several things, no avail, till I set the "Aperture Drive in AF to Focus Priority, and that was it! Now I get 10 out of 10 in perfect pin sharp focus 😊 To think that I ALMOST send the lens back for an exchange... The moral of the story, always do your homework when some situations arise, sometimes is just some setting that need adjusting, such in my case. Thanks for the video!

Have a A7IV myself, tried with 35mm f/1.4, 55mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 90mm f2.8 and there are definitely focus-issues. The camera is not permanently front- or back focusing, but even with Eye-AF and AF-C, the selection-algorithm fails. As soon as there are strong (often vertical) contrast areas, or lines the AF prefers to focus on those parts in the frame even with the green focus frame clearly being on the eye. So, the camera is dead sharp, but it "internally" selects wrong parts for adjusting rather than the one in the focus frame. Took some selfies on a tripod, focus clearly on the eye, but often "real internal" focus was on the the black and white hairs of my beard, sometimes back focusing, sometimes front focusing. Hairs distract the camera, but also gray lines on buildings, or vertical borders of doors or windows. It's clearly a flaw in the internal focus selection logic. Had lots of portraits with different very good lenses with slightly blurry eyes but only with this camera (others work fine with same lenses). Hope they come up with a firmware upgrade soon

Magic is probably the first photographer who decided to raise this problem with the operation of the aperture drive in SONY cameras.
No matter how much I wrote to SONY support, they just didn't want to notice this problem.
The impression that the developers simply do not understand why the jumping aperture was created in SLR cameras?
Finally, in the A7RIV, they added an item in the aperture drive setting "AF Priority"
But it only works in AF-C mode

I'd love to see a complete walk through of how to set up the a7iv for portrait & wedding hybrid shooting for efficiency and optimization! (How did you get the "red" focus box?

Can you make a video on how to clean any camera lens. I loved how you showed how to clean the sensor in one of your videos but would love a video on how to clean a lens and also how to record in cold weather and snow and rain how to protect our gear from getting wet or damaged etc.

Great video as always. With older cameras you can turn off exposure simulation and again the camera will use widest aperture to focus.

It’s called stop down focusing on Canon and I believe Nikon use it too. Great video and didn’t realize it was a setting on Sony cameras and thought it was only for certain bodies by default previously!
