It's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. She was great. Too bad she didn't live much longer after the series. At the time she had another series in the making.

I was privileged to have seen Irene Ryan in her Broadway show Pippin early in 1973. (She had to leave that role only a few weeks later.). She was as fantastic in that role as she had been as Granny!

Edited. I looked at the Real McCoys episode with Irene Ryan. I’d seen once before. It’s a good show too.
My wife and I bought many retro tv shows boxed sets DVDs during the pandemic stay home time. One set was the Real McCoys, some great episodes too.

The story goes that The Beverly Hillbillies helped The Dick Van Dyke Show reach a greater audience, TDVDS was almost canceled in 1962 because of poor ratings. Proctor and Gamble demanded that the show be given another season. CBS agreed and scheduled The Dick Van Dyke Show to follow a new show (Hillbillies) on the schedule. Hillbillies shot to number 1 in the ratings and these viewers took a liking to The Dick Van Dyke Show as well, allowing it another 4 seasons.
