THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO
I have been searching for hours on how to do this but all the instructions elsewhere are so vague about a majority of aspects but this one does the whole shabang - very helpful.

Joseph, I realize this is an 11 year old post. However, I have a HP laptop running Centos 9, and another HP laptop running Xming, and Putty. I can access the Centos 9 server, but Gedit will not open on my Windows 11 laptop. And yes, I have X11forwarding to yes, and removed the pound sign in sshd config. Thank you and everyone else.

Question! When I load an application it works but i cannot start multiple programs like you did. If I start Xclock I cannot continue to gedit until I close Xclock. How did you get the terminal to continue?!

I did not know about xming before this video. But, as someone else said, your explanations are very terse....

X11forwarding has to be set to yes in the server sshd config as well.

Where did you configure DISPLAY location? How did it get open in X11 server when you have not specified DISPLAY or X11 server location?

Can I do the same thing in reverse?  I'd like to run windows in a VM inside linux and run it's apps this way.

Isn't the XMing a client that's sitting on the windows machine while the xserver is running on the Ubuntu machine?
