Actually, it would effect most non electric cars, because of the onboard computers, ignition systems etc. But more importantly, there would be no fuel, because you could not pump it, because the pumps are run from mains electricity.

There is also the concern of what it would do to the power grids. If the power grids are crippled, so too is the nation.

if electronics are turned off it protects them I think, or lessens the damage. the point is not that EMP cant happen, just that no one really looks like they have any EMP weapons and they can be defended against in technology and hardware.

The largest concerns regarding an EMP blast would be the neutralization of electronic systems. Back in the 1800's, there Earth took a full-force, head-on collision with a Coronal Mass Ejection where the telegraph lines actually ignited. If such an event were to happen, the power grid would go out and hundreds of millions would be left without power. While this may cause devices like computers and MP3 players to shut off unexpectedly, it won't effect non-electric cars.

But it likely wouldn't affect the vehicles that already have their engine running. However, unless it also killed the sparkplugs which drive internal combustion engines, what concern would their be? Additionally, there is an increase in the use of piezoelectric materials, one could design a vehicle that does not need a battery to get the engine started.

And, as you said in an earlier comment, the vital electronics are shielded. So if gas stations aren't shielding them, the owners are stupid.

But, the potential effects can be deadly. It could knock out air conditioning and heating. Although EMP's are not lethal, that can still be incredibly dangerous, not as a direct hazard to our health, but equipment we depend on to live in the most inhospitable environments.

The most stupidest advise I ever heard! If there's an EMP attack, excuse me, so how you going to claim your insurance protection when the insurance companies aren't running anymore? Hello? Assuming even if the insurance companies are still operative but other insurers will try to claim their life insurance, house insurance and jobless insurance etc. all those insurance companies are going to be bankrupted before you're trying to get $$ from them.

An EMP would do incredible harm to those who are in drought conditions, and even those who are locked in their homes due to a blizzard. Without air conditioning and heating in places that need it the most, people will die from dehydration and hypothermia respectively. Sure, most of the time, these use gas, but there is still electronic equipment in them, which would be fried in the event of an EMP. Although the disturbance is likely to be temporary, they are still just as serious.

OK. I hope Glenn Beck is wrong and you are right. I do not buy long term food storage from his sponsor. I store food the old fashion way like your great grand-ma did. The folks I saw on TV trapped in the Astrodome, or stranded in NY during hurricane Sandy did not think they needed to prepare either. Reality is STUFF happens. Pretending nothing bad will ever happen to you is FANTASY.
