Epileptic here, this is true and has happened to me, but never to the point of needing stitches. The tongue will have bite marks and loose skin on the sides, and will be incredibly swelled. Sometimes bits of it will turn black or purple after being bitten like that. It tends to heal over about 3-5 weeks

Biting your tongue can cause pain, bleeding, and swelling. It's usually a minor injury that heals on its own, but you should seek medical attention if you experience certain symptoms.

My little brother just very recently suffered from a seizure because he's epileptic and thankfully he recovered from it and has been given medication in response to it but I can confirm that during said seizure he did repeatedly bite his tongue. I was thankfully in the room with him when it happened and me and my father were able to get him to the hospital to be properly treated despite how terrifying and stressful the situation can be, but we made sure to stay as strong as we could. These situations are no joke and in response to a seizure, NEVER put your fingers in the mouth of the person having the seizure since it will obviously cause them to severely bite your fingers.
