His thoughtful and poetic, assertive and tender, virtuosic and colourful playing can combine panache with purity and is driven by an impressive natural sense of balance.

For his sixth and latest Deutsche Grammophon album, pianist @Seong-Jin Cho returns to the music of Frédéric Chopin with his Piano Concerto No. 2 and four Scherzi. The album features these best-loved works in interpretations characterised by thoughtful poetry and youthful ardour. Cho came to worldwide prominence in 2015 when he won First Prize at the Warsaw International Chopin Competition, the first South Korean pianist to achieve this feat. After the success of his first studio album for the Yellow Label, featuring Chopin’s First Concerto and the 4 Ballades, Cho is now realising his wish to follow that release with what he considers to be its logical companion, a pairing of the Second Concerto and the four Scherzi. Both albums were recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra and Gianandrea Noseda.

I mean no disrespect to any of the other pianists I heard performing this on YouTube, but none of them sounded quite right to me until this one. This one’s expression is... perfect.

Wow, what a performance! So clean and transparent. Too many pianists, even the great ones, played this piece too loud to get the desired dynamic range, but Seong-Jin went the other way by pushing the limit of quiet end and it was perfect. This is how all nocturnes should have been played IMO.

조성진은 쇼팽 콩쿠르 1위의 편견을 떠나 쇼팽 곡이 유난히 잘 맞아보인다.
랑랑처럼 다소 투박하게 큰 손이 아니라 섬세하고 긴 손가락에서 오는 섬세하고 부드러운 연주가 쇼팽의 곡을 잘 살린다. 나도 여러번 듣고 있는데 긴 곡이 아니니 눈을 뜨고 연주 하는 것도 감상하고 눈을 감고 들어보면 쇼팽 곡의 아름다움이 배가가 된다.
그리 한번 들어보시기를 강력 추천.
