Even though their freedom was on the line, they wouldn't sell Esmeralda out. :(

Frollo: You can kill literally everyone in Paris, but you will NOT lay a finger on my horse

Phoebus did a brave and noble thing. Not only jumping into danger to save that family, but also for standing up to Frollo by refusing to set the mill on fire. Many of the worst atrocities in history have happened because people just followed orders even when they knew they were wrong and never stood up against evil.

How does Frollo not see the irony in gradually offering 30 pieces of silver as a bribe? Even the gypsies expressions show that they understood that reference....

Phoebus: _"With all due respect, sir, I was not trained to murder the innocent!"_

Frollo: _"But you _*_were_*_ trained to _*_follow orders!"_*

Phoebus: Snuffs out the torch in utter defiance.

Showing even as individuals, soldiers still have somewhat of a moral compass, and don't always blindly follow orders regardless of how morally or ethically ambiguous they are.

This is hands down the darkest Disney movie I've ever seen.

I love how the armor in all movies never does anything

The writers knew they were writing uphill to get the crowd to deal with the girl not falling in love with the protagonist. They had to make this guy likeable, and goddamn, they did it. Thumbs up.

"If you are innocent, then you have nothing to fear."
Orders the family to be executed ten seconds later.
Damn, even by villain standards, that's vile.

I had already liked Captain Phoebus as a character in the beginning of the movie, but this scene officially made him my favorite HoND character. He knew saving the family was more than likely to end in his death and yet he did it anyway. And when he was about to be executed he was unafraid and at peace knowing he did what was morally right in a time of utter chaos and madness. 100% respect the character. I also loved this movie growing up for the plot and music. But as an adult, I love it even more solely because the messags and dark imagery used are both much bolder and intriguing than most Disney films today even dare to be.

Frollo: "I had a little trouble with the fireplace.."
Phoebus thought at 0:13: He was the one who was shouting in the middle of the night..!!!

The thing that makes Frollo so scary is that he’s not supernatural like many other villains. He is an ordinary man gone mad with power, and someone like him is very much possible in the real world.

A person using religion as a scapegoat to justify their actions (that already exists) and placed in a position of high authority and power while wielding it arbitrarily against people they don’t like…

A real-life Frollo isn’t a fairytale but a real possibility (if not already present but biding their time).

"Insolent coward!"

Better a coward than a murderer, that's what I say

EDIT: For the record, yes, I understand he's not really a coward, I just didn't use the right words, so enough pointing it out please.

"Get him, and don't get my horse!"

Those were some damn good archers. Delivered such a ridiculous request on a moment's notice.

Phoebus: "Are you feeling alright?"
*Flashback*
Frollo: "Like FIRE! HELLFIRE! This FIRE in my skin! This BURNING...desire, is turning me to SIN!"
*End of Flashback*

Frollo: "I had a little...trouble, with the fireplace"

I love the clash between the two characters. The extremist Frollo, and the moral guided Phoebus.
