When I was little I was so confused over who Maria was and what she had to do with it so in the end I thought he had gotten Esmerelda's name wrong lol.

Frollo is the most realistic Disney villain.

the way he pulls out her scarf and caresses it before trying to rip it, but even then he fails to rip it, he just stoops down clutching it to his face like he's ashamed. he holds the scarf for the rest of the song like it's a tether, like he's still holding onto hope that he won't have to "punish" her, then her figure in the smoke vanishes and he finds out from the guard that she has escaped, that's when he throws the scarf into the fire because he has made a resolution. i love how after he throws it into the fire, he shrinks back like he's shocked at what he's done, corresponding to the "god have mercy on her" lines, it's surprisingly tender? and then when he says "god have mercy on me" the robed figures rise up around him again. I think they represent his overpoweringly pious background. if he hadn't been a monsignor, maybe he would have been less inclined to do the things he did "in the name of god". his twisted faith in god and his own religious authority is what causes him to keep doing twisted things. he's my favourite villain honestly, the way he hesitates, the way his tenderness sometimes steals through, it shows us what he could have been if he hadn't taken the route he did. he is a human after all.

It kinda blows my mind that this managed to get off with a G rating and then Frozen gets a PG when Frozen's darkest scenes don't even come close to this. But that's on the people who do the rating system, not the movies themselves. Both are in my Top 5 favorites from Walt Disney Animation.

Holy fuck the animation is on point!! THIS is why I prefer 2D Disney! It takes way more talent to hand draw flames and smoke in so many frames like this! Also, 2D animation is just so much more artsy than most 3D animation!

I love how we get Heaven's Light which is a pure song about Quasi's love for Esmeralda....





Then Hellfire plays and we see Frollo Froyo sing about his lust for Esmeralda.

People call this movie dark, but have no problem watching Lord of the Rings as a family. This movie is perfect the way it is and it greatly impacted my life in such a positive way!

I love how subtle was the fact they didn't show the soldier's face, cause in that very moment, symbolically speaking he may as well have been a sign from Maria herself granting exactly what Frollo had just asked for in his prayer (=be free of Esmeralda), she had after all just escaped from nowhere BUT Notre Dame.
