The AD “Ruined” My Rolex Datejust

I did something that many watch enthusiasts consider sacrilege: I had my vintage Rolex Datejust totally refurbished, including a new dial and bracelet. Many watch collectors believe that, as long as a watch is still ticking and keeping decent time, you shouldn’t mess with it.

Like, don’t get the scratches buffed out. Don’t change the dial or hands, even if they’re tarnished. Patina is good. Over-polishing is bad. Swapping in new parts will “ruin” your vintage watch. I disagree. I don’t see a point in preserving old stuff just for the aesthetic.

I mean, I like patina. I can appreciate someone’s raw denim progress pics. But I don’t want to actually wear those jeans. I want to create my own sick fades. (Actually, to be honest, I’ve never been able to really get into raw denim…way too much work!)

In other words, to me, patina is special because it’s personal. But why am I talking about this? My first luxury watch, and actually the only one that I own right now, was a Rolex Datejust 16030. It was manufactured in 1984 (making it just a few months older than me).

When it came time (pun intended) to have this watch serviced, I had to decide whether or not to have Rolex replace some key components that would essentially transform it into a new and slightly different/more modern watch. This video explains my decision and thought process.

🧍🏻My Sizes

I'm 5'6" with shoes on and about 125 lbs after dinner. I have a 35" chest; I usually wear XS tops and 28x28 pants (or 28x30 cuffed).

My best suit jacket size is 34 Short, but even 34S needs alterations (mostly shortening of the sleeves and jacket), so my best-fitting suits are custom.

$2800 well spent. The watch looks amazing. Slate Grey / Rhodium is one of the most underrated dial colors out there.

To many people think their Rolex is so special when 99% are mass produced and not really collectable beyond the Name on the dial. Sure if yoh have a truly colectable Rolex then best not to refurbish. Collectable cars are restored. Collectable art is restored. You did it the right way going to Rolex and not aftermarket parts.

Going vintage because it’s only what you can afford is so real. It looks good, glad you’re happy with it!

Wear your watch and do what you want with it, it's your watch! Great move Brock. Almost like restoring a classic car but adding a few modern but still tasteful upgrades. Truthfully I've been looking for the same reference you have since you released your first video about it. Something about the engine-turned bezel really makes your reference unique!

At the end, when you mention that your kids will know every scratch and mark on the watch will be from you really touched me. What a beautiful sentiment, I never thought about how patina on our possessions are evidence of our life’s journey and our personal history. I have watches and jewelry from my late grandparents that have scratches and damage on them and I will never see them the same way again, They have a lot more meaning for me now. Thank you for that. Great video as always!

Great video, thanks for making it, didnt know you could do such a thorough refurbishing for old models and even swap out bracelet styles, really helps to know that this is possible

People need to understand that watch is a tool, and as long as it's doesn't have a certain historical or sentimental value, it shouldn't be babied.

I'm a watch enthusiast, and I think you did the right thing. Also, I think the Oyster bracelet looks great on your DJ.

Patina is Italian for "Damage." I'm totally with you on this.

Hey Brock - great video. What shirt / jacket is that? Looks great on you

The one thing you didn't mention that helps justify your decision is that by having Rolex do the service it comes back with a Rolex Service Warranty Card. This is a way of legitimising a vintage piece that may not have it's box and papers anymore.

I had my 17000 serviced and they changed out everything. It looks amazing. I was very happy with their work. It’s like a new Rolex all over again.

How dare you think for yourself. You went ahead with preserving something that you spent your hard earned money on. How can you live with yourself?!

I have been swapping Rolex watches the past three years every 4-6 months or so. Seeing your story with your 1984 watch and how you restored it and plan to wear it till the end of time, made me feel beyond silly with my new watch acquisition syndrome. I think I will follow suit and will keep my latest to pass on to someone else who will also enjoy it. Wear yours in good health and thank you for the great video - already subscribed!

I like to think that Butch Coolidge Jr. watched this video and decided to have his Great-Great Grandfather's war watch rebuilt. A storied history that particular watch had, to be sure.

Not being able to decide what happens to my watch during servicing is why I don’t buy Rolex. But I’m one of those that wants to preserve patina and wear. It’s what personalizes the watch. You should do what makes you happy.

You did an excellent choice! When our luxury watch needs to be serviced it should be serviced by the AD, in the same way you would do for your car! Looks fantastic!

Really enjoyed this video, Brock. Currently rocking the Seiko SNXS79, also known as the 'poor man's Datejust'. Not quite a Rolex, but an awesome watch nevertheless!
