Rolex AD broke my heart!

In all of this, there is a huge thing being missed: they see you coming a mile away. You wanted to buy your dad an OP... but in orange, blue, or yellow?? Not black. Not silver. Tiffany Blue? Then, you go next door and ask for a 321 Speedmaster. Not a regular Moonwatch. Not even a Seamaster Planet Ocean. You asked for two watches that are for collectors of the brand (Omega) and are limited edition models. Of course they aren't available to you. You aren't a Speedmaster collector. If you were, they would've called you when it came in and offered it to you.

You aren't A Rolex collector, you're an investor. You want to buy A watch so you can potentially sell it later. That's what you look like and that's how you presented yourself. Of course she showed you the door! We have to start seeing the "Me" in these equations. Everyone wants the same thing and we wonder why everyone can't have it. If you want A watch, they would sell you a watch. You didn't ask to see a watch, you asked to see a newly released OP in only the most desirable colors. We, as a community, have to stop blaming ADs for seeing through our collective bullshit.

Depends on the AD. I went to a London Jewlers Rolex AD in NJ and although they didn’t have the Explorer 1, I was treated very well. I received a tour of the store, history lesson on Rolex, Waldorf foundation, and to top it off offered a glass of wine or whiskey. The representative took all my information and offered to contact me as soon as the model I wanted was available looking at 12 months to 18 months. Really depends on the AD I guess, but my experience was superb…even if I didn’t get the watch I wanted.

An AD isn’t going to sell watches like that to someone they don’t know. It’s not necessarily how much you’re willing to spend. If they don’t know you, AND you’re not wearing a Rolex already, forget it.

Simple: if im an average professional making a good salary, and COVID has prevented expenditure on vacations, summer events etc, im going to want to spend on other things. Many people saw they could afford a Rolex and went for it. Rolex is apart from other watch brands as a special status symbol. Social media during the pandemic increased the hype a lot. Ofc theres a supply issue with the insane demand.

Wont stop till demand dies down. There are tons of alternatives in the meantime, and I hope other watchmakers get increased prestige as well.

I suspect that as well as your theories about ADs in the west, that demand in eastern countries (mainly China) has increased dramatically in the last ten years. If production hasn't increased, there must be less available for us to buy. I can see why buying a list price Rolex is a good investment, but I'm not sure about buying grey market. This could be the top of the market, but mainly people are paying a huge amount of money for a mass produced average quality watch when for grey market prices they could have something special from a maker that does hand finishing and the movement is good enough for a display caseback.

Good watch talk but I'd have to say you've answered your own question... You go to AD'S, ask for only their hot models, talk about them like there investments/commodities, and then act with astonishment that they're not available... Go figure?

Try a bit of reverse psychology. Go into the Rolex AD wearing your Casio and start trash talking the Rolex. They might just sell you one to prove you wrong. Or you might get booted out. Either way you’ve had some fun 😅
