Where I live, all the "cheap gas" stations are so far away there's no real saving...I'm not driving across town to save a dime per gallon.

Facts - I use to deliver gas to fleet vehicles. My tanker truck was filled up at a "generic name brand" gas terminal, the public would not know of. 98% of gas is the same across brands.
The exceptions are very high octane fuel 98 and higher.
Racing Fuels are a whole other category - each fuel is formulated to the engine's specs built.

Canadian here, just filled my truck up at the local gas station on Sunday. Had a 1/4 in it before I filled up, it drove for about an hour before I shut it down. Never started back up, took it to the shop and found out almost 3/4 of my tank was water. Needless to say my engine isn't happy, damn near seized the engine up solid. The Gas station is one of the last in the area that's still grandfathered though on the whole below ground tanks. Hopefully they change that soon.

Well Scotty, up here in Kentucky I don't buy circle K gas.... There is a clear difference in my 1984 SR5 4x4

My brother in law is a trucker. Gas trucker. He said that "leftover gas" from each gas brand might sell their leftover gas to those local nameless gas shop or to smaller gas companies.

In this day & age, there is "STILL" an Exxon station near my house that pumps the gas for you. I asked the owner why he still does it, his response, "cuz I like helping people." His price per gal. is in line w/ all the other stations in the area too. 😲😲😲

I bought a simple pump and just go around syphoning other people's gas. Take that, suckers!

Here in the Twin Cities, there are only two refineries but many different brands of gas stations. I know as I loaded at them and delivered the product to these stations. Scotty is right.

The best price I get is at a Shell station so, win-win.

Where I am at we have 2 suppliers of fuel. Gas does start the same. Each branded station(shell/Chevron, etc) have their own blend of additives added when our trucks get loaded. The "bad" gas is what's called reformulated gas. This comes from gas that had been mixed with other fuels and go through a separation process. Most mom and pop stations buy this gas because it's cheaper. You can have problems with your vehicles using reformulated gas.

Especially when my car can’t taste the difference.

Back 50 years ago, we called those off brand old gas stations "Weasel-Piss" gas stations.

We pay $8 per gallon in Germany. The prices in the US sound like a dream for us.

I live in SLC. there are four different refiners here, I"ve worked as a pipefitter/welder in three of them, and there is a difference in quality. Management and bean counters are busily at work here too, not just in automobile manufacture, ... though there are standards there are differences.

You're right about the fiberglass tanks. But having worked in the industry for 20 plus years I can tell you that cheap gas has a higher percentage of entrained water in it than the more expensive blends. It's all about the additives. Spend the extra 25 cents and get gas with better additives. It'll save you down the road.

While the base gas may be the same, always look for the “Top Tier” label on the pump to get the most detergents in the fuel. You don’t need it every fill up, but every other fill up works fine. My 2006 Z4 can tell the difference and gave me problems until I started using top tier.

Costco is a literal version of heaven on earth. Typically 20 cents a gallon minimum cheaper than everywhere else, sometimes even more.

Additionally the Federal Govt charges a Leaking Underground Storage Tank fee of 0.1 cents per gallon. Not sure where this goes. But it goes.

If you have a Costco in your town, join it if you can. The Costco near me in Metro Detroit, is always 20-25 cents cheaper per gallon.
