Who REALLY creates social and cultural change: it's not what you think!

Nora Bateson is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, educator, and the President of the International Bateson Institute. Nora comes from a family lineage of complexity thinkers - her father was the systems theorist Gregory Bateson and her grandfather was the biologist William Bateson, who coined the term genetics.

Nora’s book Small Arcs of Larger Circles came out in 2016, and she is currently working on her next book about Warm Data, or the interrelational processes between and among systems.

Her work brings the fields of biology, cognition, art, anthropology, psychology, and information technology together into a study of the patterns in ecology of living systems.

Love this! Some notes-
'Bring logic to the chaos, not order to it (complexity); the logic of mutual care, humor, curiosity, learning, improvisation. Care more, take care of me and everthing first. I am not an independent agent, I am an interdependent agent in society and the complex natural systems I reside in. The natural processes hae a feedback mechanism with its enironment and the systems around it. Nature starts with generocity and reciprication, not planned schismogenesis.Bring logic to the chaos, not order to it (complexity); the logic of mutual care, humor, curiosity, learning, improvisation. Care more, take care of me and everthing first. I am not an independent agent, I am an interdependent agent in society and the complex natural systems I reside in. This is not altruistic 'i'm a better person than you' generocity. It's a "my heart is pumping blood to my feet" kind of thing. Not about good or bad, or having moral high ground--it's about showing up and paying attention. The're piles of dogshit everwhere, don't step on it, pay attention. Go beyond this sense of purity or higher version of self (everyone should be like me is crap). 'Wisdom you're looking for is much kinkier than you thought' it's not about purification, it's abotu sensitiity to systemic complexity and it's not necessarily PC of incorrect. It's beyond that.'

Loved the two episodes with Nora. Warm Data Lab has me intrigued.

In what sense is 'capitalistic competition' a form of symmetric schismogenesis? Voluntary exchange builds relationships.

actually, UN speeches matter in the way that advertisements does; its soft influence that plants seeds in the minds of the people that listen and from there- hopefully with the adults listening, things begin to align for these ideas to grow. it takes time- only whether the climate or the planet has the time.... actually, its whether WE have the time to wait, i think nature will exist with or without us lol.

expecting the UN to intervene directly in sovereign matters is not right- the UN was never set up for that purpose; after all, it was set up by a group of sovereign countries (i think it was the hanseatic league and then the league of nations or something.
