What We Get Wrong About ADHD

It’s 2021, and while more people are talking about mental health than ever before, there’s still a whole lot we often get wrong about it.

Certain mental illnesses are thrown around as casual synonyms for everyday feelings and behaviors. Think “I’m so OCD” or “wow I’m feeling bipolar today.” Most people misusing these terms don’t mean any harm, but their misuse contributes to stigma and upholds misconceptions about what these conditions entail.

In episode 3 of our five part series What We Get Wrong About…, we talk to young Canadians about their mental health journey and break down misconceptions about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with a group of passionate advocates and experts.

I feel like they should've put more emphasis on Executive Dysfunction and Emotional Dysregulations
Which is what I struggle with the most, and most people does not know it's part of ADHD

Check out Healing ADD by Dr. Daniel Amen. This book is in every library system and is the best ever written as he had done 14, 000 Brain Scans before he wrote the book.

I’m glad you made this. I’m one of those people who views being hyper and bubbly as a gift because it’s literally just being fully of energy and being super happy and feeling on cloud 9. My dad doesn’t approve of my doctors medication dose for my PTSD because the meds increase my hyperactivity and my mom agrees with the dose because she wants me to be happy instead of angry all the time. My dad acted like he’s a doctor when he’s not saying lower the dose to make me “balanced” and my mom and I were screaming at him that I am balanced and it’s not wrong to be hyper and he screamed at ME NOT her, just ME that people like me should be calm and have no emotions like my autistic brother and I’m thinking “oh so be calm like a good little robot and never be hyper, bubbly or happy” I’m autistic too and I have a problem with this. My mom said my dad wants me to be a perfect calm quiet little robot. She says when I’m hyper I’m just very excited and bubbly and perky and happy. Nothing wrong with that she says and my dad goes “yes she’s too hyper” my mom was like no she’s not and my brother sided with them saying adults shouldn’t be allowed to get excited about things and adults shouldn’t be bubbly or happy and adults should be calm and serious and not talk. Then finally my dad shouted at me “fine keep it on 150 mg be a weirdo that nobody loves! Nobody will love you with ADHD! People will think you are weird!” He kept screaming at me it needed “treated” to take my bubbly hyper personality away and make me a normal calm quiet adult :( His idea of normal is adults being calm quiet and never happy. My mom said no nothings wrong with me and that ADHD has always been a label for people who get excited and are bubbly and happy and that society labeled us as ADHD to take away who we are. I agree with her 100% I feel ADHD is harmless. True I have issues focusing and yeah my hyperactivity makes me act like a kid sometimes but those are setbacks not an illness. Not sure what to do about my dad. Been crying all night.
