I followed these suggestions on a first-time attempt at tiling. The project came out beautifully.

I suggest putting a strip of silicone sealant along the joint between the countertop and the wall. There's usually a gap there. That will stop water around the sink area seeping in and causing the chipboard to expand. I also wonder if a grout line or silicone line would be wise at eh tile that abuts the countertop to keep water and dirt out of any gaps.
I would have used the centre of the extractor as my setting out point as that is what your eyes are drawn to. This is not a criticism just a comment for those having a go themselves

Is this the b+q inspire the nation and shop elsewhere comment section... great to see people tackling these jobs, I'm a builder and seems like your videos are making people become better diy'ers, if they buy the materials from yous be worth it I suppose, well done to everybody taking on these jobs.

well I watched this video several times, tried to follow all the advice, and it seemed to work quite well. I had to fudge round my sockets as I decided I couldn't do L shaped cuts like you did, (my hack saw didn't seem to work and it wasn't worth buying another new tool for) but it looks OK if you don't look too critically. Ready-mix adhesive was great. I used a packet of powdered grout and found it needed about 10 % more water than it said - it said a 5k bag would need 1.4 litres. I knew I didn't want to mix up a whole 5K bag as I would be a slow worker, so decided to use 500 g for my first mix, which should have needed 140 mill water. This turned out to be a bit too powdery, so I added a drib more water which improved things. Hubby then found a useful little plastic tool in the garage (while he was looking for something else) which turned out to be ideal for striking off the joints (is that the right term for making them smooth?) About the thickness of a pencil, with a curved end. I have no idea what I originally got it for or when. I think it may have been meant for planting peas or even icing cakes. However it was great for making sure the grout had gone right into the gaps and giving the desired finish. It could be something that even came from B&Q, or possibly a free gift with a cooking magazine at some time years ago ... if B&Q doesn't sell little widgets like this, they probably should!

Fitting a kitchen cost sometimes more than the kitchen itself. I am going to do it myself. Thank you very much

Can you put tiles straight on (dry) paint, or do you have to sand that off first?
