Trowel in one direction not every which way and then when placing the tile press the tile perpendicular to spread the thinset into the voids and get full coverage. Lift one up time to time and see if has good coverage.

Don't go off this video of you never start in a corner and come out you always figure out your layout before you set your first piece of tile the person doing this backsplash is just asking to get to the end and it looks terrible because the way the layout falls you may have little slithers of a cut at the end shoot either have to go with that or to make it right pull all the tile and start over prime example guys don't always go by YouTube sometimes they are wrong in this case are very very wrong
