Speaker Mike Johnson is an interesting one. His ideology is horrible. He is super far-right, anti-woman; he was an election denier; a real unsavory fellow. But he really does seem to have been humbled and uplifted by the sanctity and gravity of the speakership. His actions as speaker to pass must-pass legislation amid his razor-thin grip of his ungovernable caucus paint a picture of someone who is genuinely trying to do the job of the speaker rather than dying on ideological hills. Obviously in any other time and place that would be the bare minimum of job competency, but in the deeply rabid, anti-American Republican Party of the 2020s it makes him genuinely one of their most effective and pro-America politicians.
