I think you may have misrepresented it a little. I thought it was, show proof of citizenship. Imagine you are 80 years old, have been voting since your 18th birthday, and are now told you have to show proof. Do you even have a US passport, most don't. How about a copy of your birth certificate? Yes you showed proof when you first registered to vote but what about 40 years later?
