In the manga, Whis does joke with Beerus and says Gohan could be the next Destroyer when they see his Beast form. Beerus says hes too straight laced to be a destroyer but he also doesn’t says he couldn't be a destroyer because of his lack of skill. It was a subtle acknowledgement that Gohan could be a match for a a destroyer.
