Are you looking for a rural town to buy some real estate in Virginia? Want to get a mortgage and live the American Dream or just retire away from the big city? Who doesn’t right?
Today we are looking at great rural towns in Virginia.
Virginia is a very historic state or commonwealth that in my opinion is very different depending on what side you are on. Most states are like that, Virginia seems to me to be a little more noticeable than most.
Like I said in the other videos, I normally do Top 10 lists, but not all states have 10 good rural towns and I don’t want to waste your time with some places that are a reach just to get to 10. Virginia has crime issues in their small rural towns and they seem to be lacking when it comes to decent internet. Those two things knocked a bunch of great small towns off this list. For those of you that keep commenting about not needing the internet, congratulations, you are a rarity these days. I’d also like to talk to you and find out what it's like still living in 1990 22 years later.
The focus of this series is rural towns. That normally implies a good distance outside a metro area.
With the towns in this video, we are looking for that sweet spot. A decent place to live that isn’t too close to any major cities, easy on the crime rate, not 5 hours away from a hospital or so far out in the sticks they have horrible internet. Those things knocked a lot of small towns off this list.

Virginia resident here...transplant that has lived up and down east coast united states and Europe... if you drive south on 95 to 81 for several hours you will not see such sustained beauty for hours on end in any other state.... parts of all states are beautiful but I’m talking about sustained beautiful sites for hours.... I vote we keep Virginia at only 6 rural towns worth retiring in to keep it under the radar and keep it a secret just amongst you agree say “aye”

Lived just south of Strasburg 1999-2005. Told my wife Shenandoah County would make the list. Beautiful area.

I grew up in upstate NY but have lived near Roanoke, VA for 30 yrs. The views from the Blue Ridge Parkway are stunning, mountain trails for hiking/biking are nearby, and Smith Mountain Lake is beautiful, accessible to the public, and not overly busy. I feel blessed to live here.

Lived in Roanoke. Was a nice town. The Blue Ridge Parkway crossed a piece of my 10 acre farm. It would be closed down during the winter and we would ride our horses up there with bells on the hooves.

I am a native Virginian. I moved away and lived in upper New England and the Midwest for years....moved back several years ago to the Shenandoah valley for two years until I recently moved to Hampton Roads area for a doctoral program. I have to say, my home State is not only beautiful it is quite charming. It is an honor to be a from this State.

I didn't even consider VA until I moved to NOVA for work. Wow, this state is absolutely wonderful. The mountains are so beautiful, and I grew up in CO so I know mountains well. And I love the small towns scattered in the Shenandoah mountains as well.

I had a great childhood. I grew up in Lebanon, Virginia. There is all the camping, hunting, and fishing you need. Really low crime rate, and just an awesome small town. 😎

Virginia is a lovely area. A lot of Civil War & Revolutionary War history. One of my favorite places.

I did not expect Floyd to make this list. My family used to have a house well in the outskirts and they have a good amount of local shops that my grandmother enjoys. Especially Harvest Moon. Now my childhood memories are flooding back

The LOVE signs are a big deal in VA. There are over 300 across the state. After all, Virginia is for Lovers. ❤️ Solid choices. We love living here in the Shen Valley. The beauty and outdoors can't be beat.

I live in a small town in Botetourt County VA, just outside of Roanoke VA. Been here for over 16 years and I love it. The Peaks of Otter are the crown jewel of this region. I was up there just this past Sabbath with my family. The Rhododendrons were in full bloom on the Onion hike on the Blue Ridge Parkway... it was heavenly!

I grew up in Amherst (about 20 minutes west at that traffic circle picture by route 60) and let me tell you my jaw dropped to see it on a list. But yeah, nailed the observation, it really is gorgeous everywhere there, it’s kinda nestled by small mountains in just above every direction. Would highly recommend.

I moved to the Appalachians with no broad band and I have more time, less anxiety, sleep 8 or 9 hours a night without waking up at 3 am most of the time. I feel like I have m life back.
Also, I’ve realized how delusional people have gotten regardless of politics, its the ideology that is delusional.

Love my home state Va. I'm from Danville, Va. I know it has a bad rap but its being revive and restore by the people. It has great historic homes, history, Train Station a river that runs threw it and much more. I love what they done to the downtown area and the old historic homes. Its awesome!! Thanks for sharing.
