How Are Western Sanctions Affecting the Average Russian?

A month after the invasion of Ukraine, daily life in Russia has changed drastically.

The world’s focus on Ukraine is not anymore pure visual, since sanctions over Russia and the war situation itself has also influenced western economy.

But while the west suffers price hikes on everyday necessities like food, fuel and energy, the face of Russia's economy is changing.

And while Western sanctions attempt to hit the richest Russians where it hurts, the poorest are invariably bearing the brunt.

You cannot measure the effects of the sanctions in such a short time. The true effect will not show for another 2-3 months when Russian companies start folding due to lack of needed imports and/or diminished exports. People will be laid off, inflation will skyrocket, pensions and savings will evaporate. Even those who are lucky enough to have a job will find it difficult to pay for necessities. The downward spiral have just started, and the tragedy is that most Russians seem completely CLUELESS to the fact that somthing bad is coming their way.

Really a price jump of 2.2% or 10% or whatever doesnt compare to whole Ukrainian cities being leveled by carpet bombs. It's offensive to even suggest it.

These are not sanctions, this is a “Special Economic Operation.”

It is small problem to face empty shops and no way to buy a Big Mac compared with millions who lost a home, suffering in the battle and have to fear for their life!

Hopefully it will give Russian people incentive to look for the truth and oppose Putin

But they have their lives, their homes, their family. Not so in Ukraine.

My heart to all the innocents on both sides, and the people who have nothing to do this war and with this war who are suffering.

Really 2.2% increase in prices? Not being able to eat at McDonalds and not able to use Apple pay are hardly problems.

I don't know if Russians have been allowed to be informed of the sanctions that the EU and US have put in place, and the new agreements made at the NATO and EU meetings yesterday? You probably know that Boeing and Airbus have stopped all sales of planes to any Russian airline, and also all spares and maintenance services. Aeroflot planes for example are serviced in Germany, and this has stopped. The supply of parts is potentially a bigger problem, meaning that Russian airlines will have to ground up to 50% of planes in order to cannibalize them for spares. In less than 2 years, this approach will no longer provide enough parts and Boeing and Airbus planes (including the 515 planes stolen from leasing companies) will either have to be grounded or flown unsafe.

More than 400 companies have stopped doing business and investments in Russia, including banks, financial services, car manufacturers, oil and gas collaborations, and technology sales, including microchips. Hundreds of Russian businesses will be crippled and unable to function.

Yesterday the US agreed to supply 15 Billion cubic meters of liquid natural gas to replace the gas that the EU buys from Russia, which will reduce by two thirds this year and reduce to zero within a couple of years as alternative supplies from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are established. The same applies for Russian oil, where the EU has the goal of reducing to zero all imports of Russian oil by the end of the year. The US and the UK have already stopped all buying of Russian oil and gas.Oil and gas are 70% of Russian exports and 50% of all money collected by the Kremlin. This money is about to disappear from your economy. Economic think tanks in the west estimate that this could result in an 80% rate of unemployment in Russia and reduce Russia's economy to the second smallest in Europe, ahead of only Moldova. But Russia's population is 145million. The standard of living in Russia for all but your elites will likely be reduced to the poverty of Stalinist Russia. I am sad for decent people like you, but all of this is in motion now and will not stop.Russia faces complete economic collapse.

Best hope seems to be the suffering caused by the sanctions will give the russian people the bravery to stand up by the tens of thousands & force an end to Putin's crimes!

WW1 & WW2 had economic factors that set the conditions for such to occur.

I know that shot of 3.99 per gallon was meant to be shocking, as a California resident we haven't seen gas that low since Summer 2020.
